Assault Assault and and Stymie Stymie Suburban Suburban Foes; Foes; Star Star Reward Reward in in Peabody Peabody Memorial Memorial Balheim, King Bay Among Small Field Lincoln Fields Big Holiday Stake Appears at Mercy of Shifty Dixiana Homebred HAWTHORNE, Cicero, III., May 29. The renewal of the 5,000 Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, a one mile and one-sixteenth test for three-year-olds and the richest stake offering of the current Lincoln Fields meeting, is to headline tomorrows holiday program at this historic West Side racing grounds. Dixianas crack homebred Star Reward, a quick son of Reaping Reward and Far Star, will meet four rivals from the age division in the feature at equal weights of 121 pounds and the Charles T. Fisher-owned colt is the stoutest kind of a favorite -for the race, which had its first running in 1929. Star Reward, who turned in a splendid effort in the Kentucky Derby, finishing sixth in that mile and a quarter classic after making a bold bid, should have little difficulty with his Peabody rivals. Victor in three races during his two-year-old campaign, Star Reward came up to his Derby engagement in splendid fashion. Winner over a good field, at Keenelands spring session,. Star Reward then ran Faultless to a head in the one-mile Derby Trial. Raced in Impressive Fashion After bowing to Jet Pilot in the Derby, the Fisher colt did not go to the post again until he met a useful field here last Tuesday in the one mile and one-sixteenth Rushaway Purse. Off rather sluggishly on that occasion, Star Reward easily picked up his field and won easily over Kays Love, Shadow Shot, Balheim and High Kick. While Star Rewards time over the heavy footing prevailing for that event was not on the sensational side, the manner in which the colt scored was most impressive, and he seemed to have plenty left at the wire. Steve Brooks, who has ridden Star Reward in many of the Dixiana stars previous outings, is again to be at the reins on the choice in the Peabody. Murlogg Farms Balheim, who met defeat by Star Reward in the Rushaway, is to again try the Dixiana colt in the Peabody. Balheim, a son of Blenheim n., and Quittance, was a surprise overnight entry in the Kentucky Derby, but he was withdrawn by trainer Charles C. Norman when the Louisville oval improved to "slow" for the Downs stake. Previous to the Derby, Balheim accounted for two straight races, winning on a heavy track at Gulfstream Park and then whiping a fair band at one and one-sixteenth miles at Churchill Downs on a heavy strip. Partial to the "off" footing, Balheim is expected to go well in the Peabody and he will have the saddle services of Al Bodiou in the Memorial Day stake. Bernard J. Bax, Falls City patron, is to Continued on Page Five Star Reward Favored For Peabody Memorial Only Four Face Dixiana Colt in Lincoln-at-Hawthorne Fixture Continued from Page One be represented in the principal offering by King Bay, whose forte seems to be sprinting, rather than racing over the middle distances. King Bay turned in several sharp efforts before he started in the Preakness Stakes and he can handle a muddy or dry racing strip, indicating that he will be under colors tomorrow. Trainer Raymond White is satisfied that King Bay is ready for his major engagement, as the Bax colt has worked satisfactorily. Virden and Scott will send Siddons to the post in the Peabody, and William M. Pea-vey is to depend to Jett-Jett. Siddons raced rather well during his winter campaign at New Orleans Fair Grounds and he was a starter in the Louisiana Derby, finishing sixth behind Carolyn A., Benjamin F. Whitakers good filly. Siddons recently ran third to Gotham in a six and one-half furlongs allowance race, and he -won the Riverside Purse at Sportsmans Park at a similar distance. Jet-Jett finished last in the Kentucky Derby and previous to that appearance under silks had shown nothing that might stamp him as a stakes performer. Jett-Jett, however, had some excuse in the Derby as he unseated his rider while at the post and ran off a fast quarter before the start. Chief supporting number on the holiday bill is the Lady Broadcast Purse, one mile and one-sixteenth event for four-year-olds and upwardwhich attracted a field of seven useful performers. Woolford Farms Amphibious, victor in his last start over a band of top flight platers, is the probable favorite for the secondary attraction. B. M. Smiths hard-hitting Cooling Spring, winner in his last local start, is another well regarded Lady Broadcast entrant, and Cherry Wine, Sacaton, Wire Quest, Sky Wolf, and Gigolbury complete the field. Present overhead and track conditions point to an "off" strip for the Memorial Day sport, but track officials are making preparations to entertain the largest crowd of the present Illinois season. Post time tomorrow will be 2:00 p. m., 15 minutes earlier than usual.
