i Jacobs Stalwart Strives For World s Money-Winning Title King Ranch Colt Certain to Rule as Choice; Rico Monte, Natchez, Talon in Line-Up BELMONT PARK, Elmont,. L. I., N. Y., May 29. Belmont Park approaches the peak of the entire New York season tomorrow, with the 0,000 Suburban heading the Memorial Day program and the 00,000 Belmont Stakes bringing the meeting to a close on Saturday. The scene then shifts to Aqueduct where the 0,000 Queens County Handicap heads the inaugural program on Monday. Eight of the leading handicap horses in the land, two more than had been expected, have been named overnight to this 61st running of the Suburban, headed by King Ranchs champion Assault with 130 pounds. The 1946 "Horse of the Year" and winner of the Grey Lag Handicap and the Dixie in his two starts this year will be opposed by Mrs. Ethel Jacobs Stymie, 126; Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez, 120; Arnold Hangers Rico Monte, 119; W. L. Brahns Gal-lorette, 116; -Richard N. Ryans Talon, 112; La Pomme Studs Vertigo n., 107, and C. V. Whitneys Bright Sword, 103. Whirlaways Record at Stake Assault and Stymie rank third and second, respectively, behind Calumet Farms Whirlaway on the worlds money-winning roster and both are expected to pass Mr. Longtail before many weeks have passed. A victory for Stymie, who needs only 1,226 to equal Whirlaways earnings, would put him in the lead tomorrow, but Assault will still have to win at least one more rich stake to take the lead. Assault is certain to rule the public choice, though Stymie is exceedingly popular with New York fans. The Texan has beaten him before, however, both last year and this, the most recent occasion being the Grey Lag on May 3 in which Stymie finished fourth. The Jacobs colorbearer came back to win the Metropolitan Mile at this track and has been training brilliantly. Eddie Arcaro will be astride Assault, while Stymie is to be ridden by Basil James. Rico Monte, who will have Ruperto Dono-so in the saddle, finished less than a length , behind Assault in the Dixie at Pimlico, but was beaten more easily than the final mar- i gin would indicate. The Argentinian was apparently in need of that race, and normal : improvement will make him an exceeding- ; ly dangerous rival to the top pair. While he : may not be quite the equal of either Assault or Stymie, the weights are designed to : bring them together and John Campbell is : a master of that art. Rico Monte has also : been training well. Atkinson to Ride Natchez Natchez may be the "dark horse" of the j Suburban. This fellow is one of the most improved horses in training and recently set ; a track record at Havre de Grace. Since then, he was badly beaten by Assault, Rico Monte and Talon in the Dixie, tiring badly in the late stages. The son of Jamestown, from the Coaching Club American Oaks : winner, Creole Maid, showed he-still had his ; speed this morning when he went a half i mile in :46, after three furlongs in :34, : working in handy style. Ted Atkinson, who : has been compiling a fairly remarkable rec- ord for scoring with long shots of late, will j ride Natchez in place of Eric Guerin. Talon was good enough to place second to i Armed in the Widener at Hialeah last win- j ter, then beat Pot o Luck in a swiftly run i route race at the same track, but has per- 1 Continued on Page Thirty WILLIAM H. He, too, was on the track this morning, going a handy half in 47. Doug Dod-son will be in the saddle. Gallorette is the only mare in the Suburban field, but has beaten male rivals before, notably in the Metropolitan Mile, Brooklyn Handicap and Bay Shore Handicap last year. She beat Stymie in the Brooklyn at a mile and a quarter and had him again behind her in the Butler Handicap in which she finished second to Lucky Draw and was getting 10 pounds each time, the same concession as tomorrow. The daughter of Challenger H. has shown little or nothing thus far this season and her last extended trial was just fair. Vertigo n. and Bright Sword are the surprise candidates and have little more4than their light burdens to recommend them, The Suburban was inaugurated at Sheepshead Bay in 1884, with E. J. Mc-Elmeels General Monroe capturing the first running, and has been won by the most illustrious handicap horses in the land since that day. Among the most memorable of the Suburban laureates are Salvator, Henry of Navarre, Ben Brush, Imp, Ballot and Fitz-herbert at Sheepshead Bay, and Whisk Broom n., Friar Rock, Grey Lag, Equipoise, Market Wise, Devil Diver and last year, Armed. The official stakes record is Whisk Broom n.s disputed 2:00, but it is generally believed that the fastest time record in the stake is the 2:01 hung up by A. C. Ernests surprise winner of 1944, Aletern. Stymie is the only one of tomorrows candidates who has appeared in a previous Suburban and the Equestrian stallion has been losing ground. After finishing second to Devil Diver in 1945, he was third last year behind Armed and Reply Paid.
