Hornbeam Travels Fast Six Furlongs at Belmont Timed 1:1 OVs Over Main Track; Mother Prevails in Filly Event BELMONT PARK, Elmont, N. Y., May 29. C. T. Chenerys Hornbeam turned in the fastest six furlongs on the main track at Belmont Park in many a day when he captured the co-featured Discount Handicap by five lengths from E. P. Taylors Windfields, who led Glen Riddle Farms War Trophy by another length. Norman W. Churchs Quick Reward finished a head out of the money, while Louis Rabinowitzs Speeding Home completed the small field. With Ted Atkinson shaking his whip beside his head, Hornbeam stepped the three-quarters in 1:10, just a fifth of a second slower than the track record set by Nusa-kan in 1929 and equaled by Roman in 1941. Favored in the wagering,-Hornbeam paid .40. C. V. Whitneys gray filly Mother took the Biggonet Purse that occupied the normal feature spot on the card, scoring cleverly by two and a half lengths over Joe W. Browns Dorothy B. Jr. J. M. Jerkens Soviet was another length and a half away at the end of the mile, just a head before William Helis Arctos, who came from last place for her share. Eddie Arcaro put up one of his better rides on Mother, who was second choice and paid .20. King Ranchs Bee Ann Mac, winner of last years Selima Stakes, was the favorite on reputation and some sparkling trials, but lacked speed after the three furlongs and finished sixth. A light crowd of 19,463 turned out in ideal weather. The majority were treated to a fair mixture of favorites and outsiders in the early races. After Mama Fufu took the opener to pay 2.50, Wold Win gratified the patrons by outgaming Raking in the second and returning .30. L. E. Stoddard Jr. gleaned his third successive jumping victory with Kittiwhisk in the. third race, which was over hurdles, and the Whiskaway mare paid after having opened at 9 to 1. The biggest surprise of the first half of the afternoon came in the fourth event, in which E. Roskinds Blonde Magic finished fourth at odds-on, while Russell A. Firestones Lenwell went on to win and returned 3.40. Windfields and Hornbeam raced heads apart for a half-mile in the Discount, with Hornbeam on the outside. Speeding Home followed at a respectful distance in the early stages, followed by War Trophy and Quick Reward? Atkinson laid his whip on Hornbeam at the end of the stretch, and the Whiskaway gelding drew away to score with speed in reserve. Windfields held on fairly well, while War Trophy closed fast on the outside. Quick Reward also gained some ground at the end and Speeding Home stopped to a walk.
