Church Sues Los Angeles City And County to Recover Taxes LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 29. Norman W. Church, prominent California turfman, Is suing the City and County of Los Angeles to recover taxes paid on his racing string under protest. The suit was filed through attorney J. M. Robinson, when the county threatened to sell 13 of his horses to satisfy tax claims. As was the case with L. .B. Mayer, who filed a similar suit recently, Church contends that the tax levies constitute double taxation because he paid taxes on them In Santa Clara County, where until recently he maintained a stock farm, and that Los Angeles authorities were wrong in seeking to tax his stable just because they raced at the Santa Anita winter meeting. Several years ago, Church filed a similar suit and won a decision.
