Vander- j . bilts prize two-year-old, turned in a smart effort to annex the major award in the • filly division of the National Stallion 1 Stakes. Blinkers were added to the equip- s ment of the daughter of Rosemont and Good Thing and racing straight she dom- I inated the running at every step to earn 5,250. She sped the five furlongs of the 1 Widener Course in :59% to have a three- length margin over Set Aside, racing for Mrs. George D. Widener, while a half length I back Three and Two from the Greentree ! Stable was third. • The victory was a popular one with the 1 crowd of 18,618 who journeyed to Belmont Park this afternoon, for the winner was 1 backed into odds-on favoritism. Some of the interest in the running was lost when i Calumny, racing for Joseph M. Roebling, : reared at the start and unseated jockey Basil James. • Triple for Brooks When the- three remaining starters had settled in their respective strides, Bed ORoses was showing the, way and Guerin ; was steadying her along while Set Aside and Three Two were lapped on each other. Entering the final furlong, the Vanderbilt Miss had assumed a commanding margin but Guerin was not taking any unnecessary chances for he kept his mount under urging to the finish. The battle for the place produced more excitement for the Widener and Greentree representatives were under urging to determine that position. Bed ORoses was making her sixth start. She made her debut as Santa Anita but did not earn her graduation diploma until the Jamaica meeting. Trainer Bert Mulholland withdrew Rare Perfume, the main reliance of the Widener Continued on Page Thirty Five Bed o Roses Never Leaves Final Result in Doubt Continued from Page One entry when the Eight Thirty Miss was coughing a bit. Jockey Steve Brooks was the riding star of the day, winning the first three races on the program. A 1.20 Daily Double was fashioned when Othello, racing for John S. Phipps, accounted for the first race and Whirl Awhile, from Calumet won the second race. Brooks was astride both winners. In the opener from a somewhat sluggish beginning, Othello drove up fast on the outside to down Walter P. Chryslers The Creek, while Sob Story, racing for Mrs/Elizabeth S. Tailer was third. The latter was the choice and showed the way down the Wideher course in the early running but drifted over sharply to the inner rail which did not help her chances. In the second, Whirl Awhile was placed under pressure in the stretch run and closing fast on the outside led home A. G. Vanderbilts Tantamount, while P. A. Markeys Tiger Trap was third. Galloping Gus, co-favorite with Tiger Trap, stumbled at the start and was practically eliminated. Wliirle Awhile accounted for the first success of the Calumet Stable at the meeting. Brooks made it three for himself and two for Calumet when he had Ellie S. home in front of a band of three-year-old fillies in the third. The daughter of Bull Lea and Mar-Kell came off the pace to close fast in the final furlong to trounce the Maine Chance Farms Loyal Worker . -with. Solid Trick, in. the .third Place.
