Plunder Runs Best Race To Win at Belmont Park Owner Clark on Hand as Filly Defeats LEspiegle by Length BELMONT PARKElmont, L. I., N. Y., June 10. — John C. Clark, president of Hialeah, was on hand to see his homebred-filly, Plunder, run her best race in 1949 to win the featured Semiramis Purse at Belmont Park today. The daughter of War Relic, from Pretty Pet, reached the end of the mile a length before Mrs. Laudy Lawrences LEspiegle, who led Russell A. Firestones Latest Vogue by another two lengths. Mrs. Alfred Roberts Sub finished a nose out of the money, while John S. Phipps Gay Mood, the favorite, finished last after setting the pace to the three-furlong pole. Plunder was ridden by Job Dean Jessop and paid 0.10 after getting the mile in 1:38%. An average Friday crowd of 18,586 viewed the races in pleasant weather. Favorites fared poorly throughout the afternoon. Riding honors were scattered. As expected, Gay Mood went to the front when George Cassidy pressed his button at the start of the Semiramis, but was quickly joined by Sub, who forced the pace as they stepped the half in a moderate :46%. Plunder was within easy striking distance in third place, followed by LEspiegle on the outside, while Latest Vogue, lacking her usual dash, trailed the field. Gay Mood had enough nearing the stretch turn and Sub was briefly in command, but Jessop quickly sent Plunder to the fore and she came into the stretch two lengths before LEspiegle, who cut to the inside and save a world of ground on the stretch turn, while Latest Vogue went very wide. Plunder had no great trouble holding half of her lead in the run to the wire, while LEspiegle was not threatened by Latest Vogues belated rush that just nipped Sub for third money.
