Sixteen Nominated for Governors Handicap Vulcans Forge Heads Eligibles For Detroits June 13 Feature FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 10. — The 0,000 Governors Handicap, one mile and one-sixteenth for three-year-olds and older, undoubtedly will bring together one of the finest fields of middle distance performers ever to meet over the local course, when the stake has its 1949 renewal on Saturday, June 18. Racing secretary and handicapper Charles J. McLennan stated here this morning that 16 nominations have been received thus far for the Governors and that it is possible that more entries may come for the race by late mail. Heading the present group of eligibles for the Governors is I. J. Collins fleet Vulcans Forge and his less illustrious stable-mate, Beau Nash. The Lancaster, Ohio-owned pair may make the trip to Detroit from New York for the rich race. Others named for the Governors are Frederick W. Hoopers Argentine-bred Colo-sal, Robert W. Athas Syndicate, a recent winner here; Jacob Shers Frere Jacques, S. J. Browns Tubby M., Theodore D. Buhls Air Sailor, Hal Price Headleys Pellicle, Mrs. C. L. Hopkins* speedy stakes performer, Three Rings; John Kinards Johns Joy, S. M. Newmeyers Turbine; Love Sonnet, who races for the estate of the late C. S. Popovitz; Mrs. E, E. Dale Shaffers Miss Mommy, Marion H. VanBergs Favorito, recent Chicago victor; Woolford Farms Delegate, who accounted for one of Lincoln Fields more important stakes, and Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus Seven League. Weights for the Governors Handicap will be posted on Monday, June 13.
