Quarter Horse Racing Now Recognized in California SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 10.— Quarter horse racing is now an officially recognized sport in California. Governor Earl Warren Wednesday signed the recently enacted Collins bill providing for quarter-horse racing at state, district or county fairs or at recognized racing meets whenever practicable. While such races have not been illegal heretofore, the effect of the bill would be to legalize pari-mutuel wagering on the contests. The act defines quarter-horse racing as that in which horses, with riders, engage in straightaway races up to and including five-sixteenths of a mile. The stud book and registery of the American Quarter Horse Association are also recognized as official in California.
