May 21.— The sixteenth running of the 5,000 ; added Sussex Handicap at a mile and a quarter at Delaware Park on June 27 attracted some of the leading lights of the j handicap division. The 43 eligibles include seven winners of major events this year and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords One Count, acclaimed 1952 Hcrse of the Year. The meeting opens May 29. The eligibles represent 33 interests. Three racing establishments, the most liberal nominators, each named three horses. They are Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Post Card, Yil-diz and the aforementioned One Count; King Ranch — High Scud, Risque Rogue and To Market, and William A. Read — Cockfosters, Luck Penny and Nitribois. Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs English-bred, Royal Vale, has compiled the best record of stakes winners this season. The five-year-old importation has come into his own this year, following a period of acclimatization in 1952, when he was tried over infield courses as well as flat racing strips. Thus far this year, Royal Vale has accounted for four stakes, including his last three outings. His major triumphs were in the Miami Beach, Bowie, Gallant Fox and Dixie handicaps, and in the last two named races he took the measure of Crafty Admiral, the 1952 handicap champion. The other stake winners are Belair Studs Golden Gloves, Valley Forge Handicap; Brookfield Farms-Circle M Ranchs Intent, San Juan Capistrano Handicap: Calumet Farms A Gleam, Malibu Sequet Stakes; Eugene Constantin, Jr.s, Royal Bay Gem, Everglades, Chesapeake and Jersey Stakes; Mrs. Jeffords Post Card, Laurel Handicap, and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts First Glance, Excelsior Handicap. Rated strong rivals among the other eligibles are Greentree Stables One Hitter, winner of the Suburban, Monmouth and Saratoga handicaps in 1952 and presently preparing for his seasonal debut; Jack J. Amiels Count Turf, 1951 Kentucky Derby winner; Cornelius V. Whitneys Cold Command, and Hampton Stables Alerted.
