Star Chief, Coherence Vie in Hancock Purse Each Takes Up 122 Pounds in Suffolks Six-Furlong Test SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 21.— R. W. Collins Star Chief, a sparingly raced son of Apache-Star Willow and J. Passarellis Coherence, a gelded son of Adaris, top a field of sophomores slated to match strides in the Hancock Purse here at Suffolk Downs tomorrow. The pair must shoulder 122 pounds, three more than tneir nearest rival, Murlogg Farms Fight a Little, in the six-furlong dash offered under allowance conditions. W. L. Curies Mintaway is in the Hancock with 117 pounds, with Mrs. A. C. Robertsons Army Pal and Benhaven Farms Bendigo bracketed at 114. G. J. Burns Concert Hall, 112 and Mr. and Mrs. J. a. Grants Africance, 107, round out the field to contest the ,000 purse. Star Chief, who raced only once as a juvenile, earned his graduation from the non-winners ranks at the Hialeah meeting last winter and followed that score with a pair of thirds behind classy sophomores at Gulfstream Park. In his local debut, the bay colt was very impressive while taking his second major purse. Since that race, Star Chief failed to gain a money position in an overnight handicap. Tomorrows feature looms as a good spot for the Collins colt to get back on the winning trail. Coherence was highly regarded during his winter campaign in Florida but has yet to come up with a race comparable to those he turned in during the winter season. Mintaway is regarded as a speedy son of Bossuet and in three local starts he has been first, second and third in the order named. The Virginia-owned gelding can not be overlooked in tomorrows field and could make it interesting for his rivals if his speed can hold out. Africance, a daughter of Ajax, was rested during the winter months and in her seasonal debut turned in a creditable second. She continued to impress with a third in an overnight handicap but later failed to take a part of the purse in her last start. With her feathery impost, Eddie Legeres charge could provide a mild upset in the Hancock.
