Eight Seek Balmoral s Peoria Purse Dark Toga Figures One to Beat Today Fighting Jury, Shoot Man And Two Fisted Meet Buhl Campaigner at Six Furlongs WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 5. The Balmoral Jockey Club has set aside Thursday as "Peoria Day" at Washington Park. Featured is the Peoria Purse, a ,750 six-furlong sprint for four-year-olds and upward. Eight have been named. They are Theodore D. Buhls Dark Toga, Mrs. Harry Trotseks Fighting Jury, B. W. Landys Two Fisted, Juan DAgos-tinos Argentina -bred Royal Legion, Richard A. Lewis First Lap, Mrs. Colin MacLeods Obair, H. H. Rendlemans Shoot Man, and Rebel Stables Super Devil. Although winless in four 1957 starts, Dark Toga figures the horse to beat Thursday. The colt was a good-going third behind Manassas and King Bruce H. Memorial Day over the grass at six furlongs and lost ground in going wide on the last turn. Earlier, he was fifth behind Two Fisted over a slow strip. Fighting Jury has been training well for her 1957 Balmoral debut. She was fourth in her only start last January at Tropical Park, but the winner of the 1955 Misty Isle Handicap here always has been partial to the Homewood strip. Royal Legion Argentine Importation Royal Legion was seventh here a week ago at seven furlongs. The Argentina importation was making his first Chicagoland appearance and his third in this country. He was beaten off badly in a pair of Gulf-stream Park events. Two Fisted was a disappointing fifth here two weeks ago behind Vagabond King at six furlongs, the War Jeep six -year-old failing to duplicate the form showed a race previously when he was a half-length winner here, his only victory in nine starts this season. Shoot Man goes after his fifth win in 12 starts this year, the consistent Tiger Man gelding coming off a victory over Checkered Flag and Deep Breath here two weeks ago. Earlier, he was fourth behind Two Fisted. Obair makes his third Balmoral attempt. His best race this year was a victory in 1:11 for six furlongs at Laurel. He was unplaced in the La Salle and fourth behind Vagabond King two weeks ago. First Lap was unplaced in his only two Balmoral starts, the latest on the grass behind Manassas. He has won one race, a Keeneland sprint two months ago. Super Devil was eleventh in the Citation Handicap here two weeks ago. It was the horses fifth 1957 start without victory, although earlier he was second in a Churchill Downs sprint.
