| • I SCHANK MEMORIAL HANDICAP First Saturday Feature at Hawthorne Preceded by Three Attractive Week-Day Handicaps. i ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 19 —A schedule of three attractive week-day handicaps, climaxed by the ,000 added John C. Schank Memorial Handicap on the first Saturday of the meeting was revealed today when the first edition of the Hawthorne condition book was placed in the hands of horsemen. Hawthorne opens on July 30, with a thirty-day meeting that carries on the Chicago racing program. Most important of the offerings designed for the initial week of the meeting byracing secretary Francis Dunne is, of course, the Schank Memorial. Run for the first time last season as a tribute to the late John C. Schank, long-time president of Hawthorne, the Schank Memorial last year fell to D. A. Woods Indian Runner, with Poly-dorus second and Mr. Sponge third. The first running was at six and one-half furlongs, but this time the Schank Memorial will be at a mile and a sixteenth, in line with secretary Dunnes policy to make as many races as possible for horses of the better grade at distances of more than a mile. Entries will close Thursday, August 2, and weights will be assigned the next day. The race is for three-year-olds and upward. The sprinters will not be neglected, either, during the opening week. The feature of the eight-race opening day program will be the ,200 Berwyn Handicap, at six furlongs, for three-year-olds and over. On Wednesday the ,500 Maywood Handicap, at six and one-half furlongs, will be offered for three-year-olds and over. On Friday, the best two-year-olds at Hawthorne — and reservations indicate that many of the first class juveniles will perform in the meeting — are expected to come together in the Ellerslie Handicap, at five and one-half furlongs. « —
