LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 28.— Broadcloth, an invader from the West Coast, reminded i I j a sunny days attendance at Churchill i [ j Downs that he is an eligible for the Ken- . j tucky Derby, when he dusted off several [ i other candidates in the featured mile Count ; Fleet Purse. Jockey Mike Caffarella had the leg up on the dusky son of Good Goods, challenging Brief Sigh entering the long ; homestretch and outlasting the River Di-i . vide colorbearer by a half-length margin. . i ! Dave Fergusons Bell-Buzzer, conqueror j of Skytracer in the Stony Point, was a i ! I stanch favorite for the Count Fleet, but could only finish third, five long lengths off | the battling leaders. Canina, a filly, was ! fourth in a field of seven. Bradcloth negotiated the mile in the fair- j ish time of 1:3835 on a dry racing surface I and paid his following a handsome 4.20 j for in the mutuels. The Californian was purchased from John Marsch for a reported j 2,000 last autumn. This was his first! tally since October and he came here j debited with two reversals at Bay Meadows, j Whereas Skytracer was a victim of too, much pace when beaten by Bell-Buzzer ini the Stony Point, there was not enough pace I for Bell-Buzzer in the Count Fleet. He lay j far out of it, a la Whirlaway, the f irst part ; J of the race, but those before him were un- j Continued on Page Ttoenty-Six Broadcloth Outruns Five Derby Hopefuls at Downs Whips Brief Sigh, Bell-Buzzer To Complete Double for Poulsen Continued from Page One der wraps and he could gain little ground in the brush past the stands. The return of bright spring weather found a large off-day attendance present for the Count Fleet and its supporting events. Business at the gate and in the mutuels helped swell the weeks revenue for the American Red Cross. Broadcloths success, incidentally, was the second in as many races for the Poulsen establishment, which was represented by the winner, Burgoo Dinner, in the preveding event. The Count Fleet began with Court Flash moving slightly before Brief Sigh, Signals Bloke and Broadcloth, leading under suf-ference to the turn. At this juncture Signals Bloke tired and fell back. Entering the stretch, Brief Sigh and Broadcloth inaugurated their moves together and they staged a long, spirited tussle the length of the stretch with Broadcloth proving the stouter of the two. Dropping out of sight at the break. Bell-Buzzer was under pressure through the home lane, but picked up only a few tired horses and finished a distant third. Valley Flares, a recent winner, also ran disappointingly.
