BACKBONE WINS HANDICAP Stuart Polk Saddles Victor of Bainbridge Park Feature — Oregon Fir Second. CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 1.— Stuart Polk saddled the winner of the ,000 Cleveland News Handicap, the fifth and feature offering of the half-holiday card at Bainbridge Park this afternoon in Backbone, owned by Fowlie and Shea. The San Merg Stables Oregon Fir raced to second place, while the Green Isle Stables War Hawk took the minor reward. The distance, one mile and a sixteenth, was run in 1 :45%, which marked a new track record. There was a decided change in the weather, which turned so cool that topcoats were a necessity for comfort. Overhead the skies were clouded, but a big crowd turned out to witness the sport. The track was at its best. Al Dunlaps Queen Towton made her local debut in the Great Lakes Purse, secondary feature, run as the fourth race. She ruled favorite and was a handy winner after racing closely lapped with Paragraph for the entire distance. Paragraph had no opposition for the second honors. Once more the Worthington stable provided the winner of the juvenile race, when Union W. annexed the third race from Reveille Boy. The pair raced closely lapped for the entire length of the stretch. Union W. proving best. It marked his maiden victory. Finishing fast and gamely on the outside in the stretch, Hal Bookers To Eva got up in the last few yards of the second race. Sucrose, the pacemaker, was an easy second. Verbena came from far back to get third in the final strides. After being displaced from the leadership Empty Glass came again next to the inner rail in the final eighth of the opening race and headed Liborio in the last few strides. Martha J. proved best of the others.
