I MLEAN STAR IN CLASSIC o Silverdale One of Stables Eligi- bles in Rich Race. 1 Neddie and Mayor Walker Others Nominate* by Washington Sportsman — staying Ability Is Questioned. ♦ Silverdale, the three-year-old colt from the stable of Edward B. McLean, whose record four consecutive winning races inside of two weeks at the present Churchill Downs meeting has earned for him a reputation for consistency seldom achieved by any colt of similar age in spring racing, is one of the stables three eligibles to the American Classic, which great special for three-year-olds to be decided July 13, at Arlington Park. Neddie and Mayor Walker are the other stable nominees to the stake, and this trio together with approximately twenty other horses will comprise the consignment trainer John F. Schorr will campaign at Arlington during the July meeting. Schorr had the satisfaction of saddling the winner of the American Derby, run at Arlington Park last season, when Mr. McLeans Toro scored impressively over Misstep, Solace, Strolling Player and seven others and ran the one and a quarter in :05%, over a track that was classed as "good," and Schorr would not be averse to furnishing the winner in the American Classic. Neddie, of course, on his form of last season is the stables most potential eligible to the Classic, and Schorr believes he would have a good chance to win if the son of Colin and Black Flag can be gotten ready in time. Mayor Walker has not been performing with any degree of brilliancy this season, and his trainer believes the brown colt will lack the qualities of being a first rate three-year-old. Silverdale, on the other hand, has improved vastly over his juvenile form, and is one of the outstanding developments of the spring season. He made his three-year-old debut in a race at Pimlico May 2, and was beaten a slight margin by Water Lad, a four-year-old. In Silverdales next two starts, which were at Churchill Downs, he was pitted against selling platers, and Schorr took chances of having the son of The Porter-Margaret Ogden claimed. Silverdales two following races were in handicaps or allowance races. In his final races, last Monday, Silverdale packed 110 pounds and beat a field of older horses, running six and one-half furlongs in 1 :18%, over a good track. This was his best effort of the sen son. All of his races have been at either three-quarters or six and one-half furlongs and it remains to be seen if he can win at a longer distance. If the colt can win at a mile or over he will have to be reckoned with in the running of the three-year-old stakes ia which he may be a starter.
