LATONIA OPENS TUESDAY 3 ;ene of Kentucky Racing Activities Shifts from Churchill to Kenton County Track. This week sees another important change in the racing calendar, the scene of Kentucky activities shifting from Churchill Downs to Latonia, where the spring meeting begins Tuesday. There will be no racing in Kentucky Monday. Latonias opening day brings the seventeenth running of the Inaugural Handicap. This is a race of ,000 added value, which usually invites the attention of stables having the best handicap horses in the Middle West and this year is no exception in this respect. There were sixty-two nominations and they included a large number of horses which will be racing for stakes during the summer in both Kentucky and Illinois, and, in addition, a few which are of more than passing prominence in the East. Other stakes of more value attracted some of the top-notchers, such as Toro and Misstep, but there will be at Latonia a sufficient number of good stake horses to compose a field that will be up to the Inaugural standard. Toro, which was assigned top weight for the race, was shipped East to go in the Suburban Handicap Saturday, while Misstep is heavily engaged in the big races on Chicago tracks. This left only Jock among the three heavily weighted eligibles as a likely starter in the race. If he goes he will have to carry an impost of 126, only two less than his celebrated stablemate would have had to carry. He would be compelled to concede several pounds to any of the several other possible candidates, including Nassak, Greenock, Martie Flynn, Republic. Chicago, Flat Iron, Hydromel, Tutti Frutti and Easter Stockings. The Inaugural, which is run over a distance of one mile and a sixteenth, has only once in very recent years been won by a horse carrying high weight. The exception was when Princess Doreen, the retired "queen of the turf," won in 1926 with 122 pounds up. Since 1920, the year The Porter won with 131 pounds up. the winners have been comparatively lightly weighted. Old Rosebud was the winner back in 1917 with 124 pounds up. Last year the race was won by Rolled Stocking, with Genial Host second and Royal Julian third.
