VICTORY FOR CHICAGO Defeats Jack Higgins by Inches in Homewood Feature. ♦ Equals Track Record for One Mile and an Eighth — Patricia Marian Wins Again. ♦ HOMKWOUD, 111., June 25.— The frequently disappointing Chicago scored his first local success this season when he got home before Jack Higgins, with Frances Milward in third place. Chicagos victory came in the Briarcliffe Purse, attracting five starters. Chicago ruled the favorite, with Jack Higgins and Longridge also having considerable backing. The winners time for the race, 1 :51, was the fastest for the distance this year, and equaled the track record. Chicago benefited by the fast pace that Jack Higgins, Frances Milward and Longridge forced in the early stages and moved up with a rush when Longridge was taken back just before making the lower turn. Frances .Milward suffered at this stage when bumped by Chicago. The latter came determinedly beginning the stretch, but Jack Higgins continued in a slight lead until the last eighth, where there was a closing up, Frances Milward joining the pair. She was going gamely when Shropshire attempted to bring her between Jack Higgins and Chicago, but suddenly the rider changed his mind and took back and rode to the inner rail. This cost her some ground and left Chicago and Jack Higgins to fight it out. Chicago proving the gamest in the final strides. Frances Mil-ward was only a short distance back and a considerable distance in advance of Longridge, which never was a contender after Taplin took him out of it. Weather and track conditions were ideal for the sport, and it attracted another large crowd. FIVE STRAIGHT WINS. Patricia Marian, a winner in her four preceding starts at this track, continued her unbroken record and won the mile and seventy yards sixth race, which followed the feature. Maxiva finished in second place, with Mally Jane in advance of the others. Patricia Marian raced close to the leaders from the start, and it was little trouble for her to move into the lead when called on, and she won easily. Maxiva began slowly, and was ridden wide, but came steadily and fast in tin- last eighth to outstay Mally Jane. S. W. Kleins colors were carried to their first victory at Washington Park when Theo. Rochester, under the hustling tactics of P. Neal, was an easy winner over eleven other youngsters which started in the opener. Cal-cite finished in second place and Port Car was in advance of the others. Lillian Tobin was confidently backed here, but after promising well for a quarter by racing close up suddenly dropped out of it after meeting interference. The winner was always close to Tabby Cat, the early leader, and took command handily when called on in the stretch. Tabby Cat began tiring badly in the last eighth and was passed in succession by Cal-cite. Port Gar and Altavar. The Nevada Stock Farm scored its first victory of the season in theande parts when Crucero was home winner in the second race, which brought together a band of maiden thiee-v. ar-oids. Ci ucero was regarded with high favor, and ruled an overwhelming choice. Jie was under restraint for three-eighths and had to be urged some for a period in the Stretch to wear down Honeyman. but came away readily in the last eighth, to be a handy winner. Honeyman was an easy second, with Guy Frazier best of the others, in third place, but a considerable distance from the leading pair. DISPLAYS BEST FORM. The Jones Stock Farms Salona raced in his best form in the third race and it was tood enough to land the purse in advance of Spectre and Bruno. The leading trio were at all times prominent in the running. Salon i drawing away in the last eighth with much in reseive. Bruno and Spectre alternated in the lead for the Brat half mile, with St. Matthews also prominent, but the stretch found the latter trio tiring and the winner finished much the stronger. The Ktuyvesant Peabody representative, T. S. Jordan, was victor in the fourth race in handy fashion over Gracious Gift, witli Blessefidd in third place, the favorite, Crof-ton following. The latter had slight oppoi-tunity to display his best form in the race and suffered continuously through interference. T. S. Jordan rushed into the lead in the first eighth, heading Aleader, Crofton and Water Lad. At the first turn Crofton and Aleader dropped far baric as a result of the slight int- rferenee. Gracious Gift became a contender at this stage and Water Lad was displaced by Hie: sefi Id. There was no material change in the sir tch running excepting that Crofton came fast when urged hard, bat ,rould not close the gap between himself and the trio in advance of him.
