FAVORITES DISAPPOINT First Five Choices at Homewood Meet Defeat Sidney Grant Furnishes Outstand ¬ ing Upset of Day in Avalon Park Purse Track Slow HOMEWOOD 111 June 5 Well suited by the slow track the result of a heavy shower shortly after racing began Sidney Grant threeyearold son of Maintenant making his first start of the year in these parts raced to an unexpected triumph in the Avalon Park Purse at Washington Park this afternoon Brought from behind the leaders under a good ride by Charles Corbett the winner carried the colors of A Bartelstein Cicero owner jto thQ finish a length in front of Listo the fifth favorite to suffer defeat in as many races Two lengths back Chariot also a threeyearold was third and far in front of Frances Milward Blessefield and Bewithus which completed the field fieldThe The victor successful in but one of his fourteen previous engagements during the year was brought to todays race in fine fettle by trainer G J Miller Having speed from the start he followed close up during tile early stages which witnessed Listo hold ¬ ing a short advantage over Bewithus and Chariot ChariotOn On the stretch turn where Bewithus sud dently dropped back the victor began work ¬ ing his way up and standing a mild drive headed Listo an eighth out and drew away slowly thereafter Listo aided in saving ground for the entire race held on in his best fashion after being headed with the result that Chariot which after being blocked on the turn raced wide and did not threaten his position positionACTS ACTS BADLY AT POST POSTBlessefield Blessefield of which much was expected wore himself out at the post where he was on his worst behavior and twice unseated jockey Parmalee He was unable to reach contention when urged hard during the first half mile and tired after reaching the turn yet succeeded in outstaying Bewithus whose condition after showing early speed verged on complete collapse collapseThere There was another fine crowd out and while public judgment miscarried with un ¬ canny consistency keen interest was noted throughout the afternoon The hard shower served to temper the hottest weather of the meeting and the result was most refreshing refreshingZeta Zeta a recent arrival from Kentucky raced to victory in her second consecutive start when apprentice J Marinelli drove her to the finish a half length in advance of American Thunder in the threequarters of a mile race for fillies and mares which opened the pro ¬ gram Nora D followed a neck back and Vermiculite was fourth Zeta after con ¬ tributing to a delay at the start began in close quarters but got clear in the run to the turn and withstanding American Thun jler in the final drive never surrendered the lead while American Thunder raced promi ¬ nently from the start Nora D and Vermicu ¬ lite raced from a long way back in the stretch and finished fast fastTHATS THATS IT FAILS FAILSThe The race had its disappointment in Thats It the Three Ds Stock Farm starter which received strong backing only to fail at reach ¬ ing serious contention at all stages She was making her first appearance since the winter season seasonWalter Walter Taylor saddled a winner for H P Headley when Carl Meyer in the popular blue and white drove Tryor home a nose in front of Seguro in the second race This was for masculine maiden juveniles and the race run in a terrific downpour was for the most part obscured Brown Hills was the one to finish third with Gun Fire following The winner after forcing Gun Fires early pace over the dull footing worked his way to almost a clear lead in the stretch but Seguro finished fast and all but caught the Headley youngster Brown Hills also made up some ground during the run through the stretch which witnessed the gradual retire ¬ ment of the early leaders The start ef ¬ fected rapidly eliminated Magic Flute the public choice There was another triumph of the colors of Stuyvesant Peabody local owner when his McGonigle easily defeated Devon Whisk arm and two others in the HazelCrest Claim ¬ ing Handicap This was decided as the third race and was run over one and oneeighth miles milesCarl Carl Meyer riding the winner rated the gelding back of the pace set by Whiskarm until Well into the long stretch and disposing of Whiskarm with a rush he drew away and was not endangered by Devon winning by two lengths The latter after racing on fourth race given over to twelve of the poorer grade juve ¬ nile fillies for which Sun Porter was a pro ¬ nounced favorite The latter suffering mild interference in the run to the turn was never a factor while Tan Face led through ¬ out and held on with marked gameness in a long stubborn drive which witnessed Zebra on the outside and Directly ready to snatch the lead at the slightest opportunity At the end Tan Face had but a nose over Zebra and Directly followed a head back backJockey Jockey R Creese on Donna Vivian had a close escape from injury when he was brushed off the filly shortly after the start startThe The combination of setting most of the pace and slight interference from Dedicate in the stretch cost Camp Boss coupled with Play Ball in the colors of John Marsch honors in the Wildwood Purse which came as the sixth sixthA A nose separated the more fortunate Tippy Toe from Camp Boss While Tippy Toe sprinted into a lead of a half length as Camp Boss and Dedicate bumped repeatedly during the drive Camp Boss was getting to her in the final strides and just failed to get up Dedicate was third a half length back with Cullodem following followingThe The defeat of
