ODDSON FAVORITE LOSES Storm Succumbs to Friar Cliff in Connaughts Feature Ideal Conditions Favor Opening of Meeting on Quebec Circuit Doctor Fred Is Victorious Over Surtccs OTTAWA Ont June 5 Friar Cliff car ¬ ried the silks of H C Geenan to victory in the running of the Queen City Purse the event of the most importance on the in ¬ augural program of the Connaught Park Jockey Club today In a driving finish he captured ths winners portion of the purse defeating Storm from the T Calcina barn which was the heavily supported oddson choice by a length Third wentto Wrackell from the R H New establishment The only other starters were Jane Rinehart and Dark Angel AngelDark Dark Angel went out to show the way Jane Rinehart was right at her flanks and Storm was just a short distance off the pair to lead Friar Cliff and Wrackell Midway of the back stretch Storm moved through a narrow passage between the leaders to take command but he was quickly joined by Friar Cliff which was going along in greatly im ¬ proved fashion Friar Cliff was racing the strongest as he reached the favorite and in the final quarter mile was able to forge to the front and he drew out steadily near ing the finish Wrackell was beaten a neck for second secondConnaught Connaught Park opened the spring term of racing under most ideal conditions A large crowd journeyed to the course to usher in major racing on the Quebec circuit of the Canadian Racing Associations Photograph from the Mrs J Diebold sta ¬ ble added his third consecutive purse to his earnings when he accounted for the initial race At the end the winner one of the favorites was just a head in advance of John Bosleys Marie Blanche II with E F San fords Pygmalion the lukewarm favorite in third place just a short distance behind the leaders Photograph racing in the thick of contention from the beginning displaced Sid ¬ ney W the early leader approaching the stretch and under pressure to the end just managed to withstand Marie Blanche II IILassa Lassa from the H W Fry barn proved best of the dozen platers that matched strides in the second race a split of the first when in a drive E Fator got him home winner by a length and onehalf from Balai dOr A Smiths color bearer while third fell to A L Taylors Illumine when he outstayed Mrs C Middletons Grierson for that portion of the purse purseLassa Lassa found some difficulty in finding his racing legs in the early stages but when fully in his stride he raced to the leaders rapidly and in the final furlong displaced the leaders to come away steadily near the finish finishFive Five good route performers engaged in the mile and onesixteenth test under claiming conditions which was the offering of second ¬ ary importance and a tight fight for honors resulted when Doctor Fred from the O Proulx barn took a length decision from J Bosley Jrs Surtees after the pair raced along in advance of the remaining starters for the entire trip Third was landed by J Asias Pomfret PomfretJockey Jockey T AVilson was on his second suc ¬ cessive winner of the afternoon when he rode Moden in the silks of J C Fletcher home the winner of the six furlongs of the fifth event that attracted a field of seven maiden homebreds Retainer from the Riverdale Stable after cutting out the pace until over ¬ taken by the winner at the final furlong pole saved second place with Nipigon accounting for third
