ONLY ONE COMPLETES ROUTE Darkness Finishes Alone in Mea ¬ dowbrook Steeplechase Kal Feng Triumphs In Pennant Purse Large LargeCrowd Crowd Witnesses Program at atBclmont Bclmont Park NEW YORK N Y June 5 The Meadow brook Steeplechase Handicap was the special feature of the day at Belmont Park and it resulted in something of a farce when only one of the three starters completed the course This one was the mare Darkness racing for Thomas Hitchcock and ridden by G H Pete Bostwick the amateur that has been so tremendously successful in his cross ¬ country riding Tho race had a value of 2950 2950Old Old Jolly Roger from the Greentree Stable and ridden by Dolly Byers went down at the third jump while Melita II an added starter refused persistently at several jumps and was finally pulled up That left nothing to go after the Hitchcock mare and she had simply to stand up to be the winner winnerDarkness Darkness came out of her race a bit lame while Byers suffered a bruised left arm and a badly lacerated face as a result of his fall Melita II after many crazy antics finally bolted with A Kelly who had the mount and he finally slid from the saddle without being hurt It was another day of midsummer temperature but some cooling breezes blew over the course making condi ¬ tions delightful for another big crowd In the attendance were some of the early ar ¬ rivals from Kentucky and Chicago having come here for the running of the Belmont Stakes Saturday SaturdayThe The first race was a five furlongs dash for maiden juveniles and Gay Pal from the stable of P S P Randolph was an easy winner when he led home J P White Dedie St Francis racing for Mrs Milton W Holden beat out Zachary from the Rancocas Stable for the short end of the purse purseGay Gay Pal breaking well at once rushed into command and he was well clear of his field all through the running Deedie closed reso ¬ lutely under a long drive and St Francis had little trouble leading the others over the line The race run by Prince Peter was a disappointment After breaking sluggishly he was never able to reach a contending position positionLaverne Laverne Fator gave an exhibition of his best riding in the third race when he brought Kal Feng from the Rancocas Stable home the winner over Dr Irving Jacobs Sun Mission Louis H Rowes Sepoy was third with Kildare and Chicatie the only other starters following in the order named namedIt It was Sun Mission that set the pace and Fator was content to rate Kai Feng along back of him under slight restraint Kildare was in third place and just showing the way to Chicatie and Sepoy SepoyIt It was after leaving the back stretch that Continued on twentysecond page ONLY ONE COMPLETES ROUTE Continued from first page Workman shook up Chicatie and he moved up fast but Fator held his second place and Sun Mission was still showing the way This was the order when the stretch was reached and Sun Mission was hanging on resolutely but Fisher had gone to a drive on the son of Sun Briar Avhile Fator was still depending on a hand ride Gradually he raced past Sun Mission but the pacemaker came again in the final strides and there Fator roused his tiring mount sharply with the whip to have him winner by a half length lengthThe The first two had drawn away from the others in the final furlong and Sepoy out finished the others but was six lengths back of Sun Mission Chicatie had no excuse and tired badly after a little exhibition of speed in the middle distance distanceThe The fourth was a seveneighths handicap for fillies and mares that attracted eight good ones This saw Mrs George Carrolls Okaybee the winner when she raced away into a long lead and hard ridden by Mack Garner in the stretch lasted to be winner by a couple of lengths Samuel Ross Lady Cauplet raced to second place and third was the portion of Lace from the Mendham Stable StableThe The start was good and while Lace was first to show Okaybee was rushed through with such success that she was soon clear and then two lengths to the good and rac ¬ ing along next to the inner rail Lost Agnes and Lace closely lapped followed her and Lady Capulet raced at their heels and further out on the course the others were in more of a strungout order with Adequate last lastGarner Garner made every use of Okaybees Speed with the result that she was still clear of the others as she turned into the stretch There Kennedy moved up with Lady Capulet but he was forced to go to the outside losing con ¬ siderable ground Lace was giving her best and unable to catch the flying leader and Lost Agnes was beginning to show signs of tiring Tn the last furlong Garner rode with hands and heels and kept the Carroll filly going to win by two lengths though she was thor ¬ oughly tired at the end Lady Capulet put gamed Lace to earn second place by a nose and Adequate after losing considerable ground finished at the heels of the daughter of Bunting BuntingThe The fifth was known as the Lady Owners Purse It was a four and a half furlongs race through the Widener course for juve ¬ niles the bona fide property of ladies Eleven went to the post with Mrs William Zeigler Jr represented by two Phantasime and Oro while the Montpelier Farms silks were car ¬ ried by Whisker and Principio This saw High Day racing for Mrs Victor Emanuel winner with Jubilate from the Brookmeade Stable just nosing out Phantasime PhantasimeFor For the mile and a quarter race at the end of the program Robert II Davis Jrs Naylor did not appear in the paddock at the ap ¬ pointed time and he was ordered scratched After the others had started the parade to the post an exercise boy appeared with the tardy colt but he was too late to take part in the race That left a field of five and the winner turned up in Bannerette from the Sage Stable She led home Frank E Browns Wu with something to spare and E R Bradleys Night Signal saved third from Dabster Eaby went right to the front from the rise of the barrier and Bannelte was good enougli never to surrender that lead Night Signal raced second to the final furlong where AVu outgamed her in the drive driveIt It developed that Andy Blakelys foreman was late with Naylor for the reason that he thought the previous race was the fourth in ¬ stead of the fifth That accounted for his failure to bring Naylor to the paddock in time The stewards imposed a fine 9 100 on Blakcly for the mistake
