DUPLICATES 1930 RACE • Balko Again Accounts for Speed Handicap at Belmont. « Sun Meadow Walks Over for Syson- by Purse — Scratches Riddle Days Program — Track Muddy. • NEW YORK, N. Y., June 9.— Balko. which races for the Sagamore Stable, repeated his victory of last year when he was winner of the Speed Handicap at Belmont Park this afternoon. The race had a net value of ,175 to the winner, and the son of Omar Khayyam was top weight when he carried 132 pounds. Joseph E. Wideners Mr. Sponge, after meeting with early interference, raced to second place, with the Dorwood Stables The Beasel, easily saving third from Cary T. Grayson s Happy Scot. Conditions were about as disagreeable as could have been imagined for racing. There was a cold drizzle falling most of the afternoon, the track was muddy and the card was riddled with scratches, one race, the Sysonby Purse, being a walk-over for Mrs. Katherine Elkins Hitts Sun Meadow, a candidate for the Belmont Stakes to be run Saturday. In the running of the Speed Handicap, Balko quickly found his way into the lead, and. racing strongly next to the inner rail, he was never headed. As the field left, Panetian. which had been taken to the outside of the stalls, came over sharply to cut off Mr. Sponge, and the Widener gelding ran an excellent race to be second a length a half back of Balko. HAPPY SCOT TIRES. The Beasel raced close up all the way and finished gamely, while Happy Scot tired under a drive in the final sixteenth. Flying Heels, after showing a flash of early speed, quit rather badly, and was shuffled back. G. H. "Pete" Bostwick continued on his winning way when he brought Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Madiola home winner of the short course steeplechase. Incidentally it chalked up a double for the silks for the first race had gone to Neverfade, which bore the same silks. In the chase it was C. V. Whitneys Spinner that raced to second place, with Bayard Warrens Young Prince beating Augustus F. Goodwins Red Flag, the only other to complete the course. Rigan McKinney was unseated from Inception at the front field Liverpool, while Faro was pulled up after taking two fences. The track condition resulted in only four ijoing to the post for the four and a half furlong dash for juvenile fillies that was the third offering. It brought a good finish, but really amounted to a two-horse race, with Wr. R. Coes Laughing Queen, a half-sister to Pompey. outgaming Harry F. Sinclairs Zonda to be the winner by a narrow margin. Mrs. Herbert Pulitzers Emancipate was a distant third and Mrs. Lucille B. Harris Ep a more distant last. WORKOUT FOR BELMONT. Sun Meadows walk-over was only a workout for the Belmont Stakes. The son of Sun Briar and Red Clover galloped well for a mile in 1:16-.% and was worked out to the mile and three furlongs, finishing strongly. He is ready for a mile and a half. The opening race was a seven furlongs dash, under claiming conditions, and it resulted in a surprise when Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Neverfade won from C. Harvey Pierces The Heathen, with George D. Wideners Condescend finishing a distant third in front of Stand By. from the Brandon Stable. The Heathen set the pace, but he was closely followed by Neverfade and Condescend, while the others were soon far back. These three dominated the race throughout, and it was not until well inside the final sixteenth that Neverfade finally wore down The Heathen to win going away by a length and a half. Condescend tired badly in the final drive and was beaten three lengths for second place but was half a dozen lengths before Stand By, which had raced fourth throughout.
