NELSON COLORS IN FRONT I * Crushed Stone Triumphs Over Dou- C ble 0. at Bainbridge Park. • R:c?s Decided Over Slow but Rapidly Improving Track — Purlie Finally Accounts for Purse. r 1 » s CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 9.— Mrs. N. Nel- r sons Crushed Stone took the measure of the best field of the day at Bainbridge Park £ this afternoon in winning the fifth race with € considerable to spare from Double O. and Helen Dean. Jockey J. Demane sent the J Trap Rock colt to the front at once, opened up a long lead on the back stretch and was never seriously threatened thereafter. Dou- J ble O. displaced Super Toy and Aurica from j second place approaching the turn for home, which he retained thereafter. After being j crowded back shortly after the start Helen J Dean eventually outlasted the tiring Aurica J for third. , The races were decided over a slow track, but the going improved rapidly as the afternoon progressed. The weather was clear j but cool, and the attendance was of usual portions. The racing was spirited, featured ■ by numerous thrilling stretch struggles. Your Flag was a handy winner in the * opening race. It was not without a keen stretch struggle, however, that she succeeded in disposing of her opponents. Best J Maifou and Miss Sue were keen factors un- J til the final furlong was reached, when Sweet Senorita also joined in the struggle, finishing fast next to the inner rail. The latter secured second place in the final J strides, while Miss Sue caught Best Maifou £ for third in the final strides because the latter raced very wide during the run home. E. Warners Hippias scored his second J success of the present meeting when he J overhauled Bright Comet during the final furlong of the second race, and won by a half length in a drive. It was a close finish, | and Bright Comet held on courageously during the final drive. Baboo was a factor until well inside the final furlong post, then tired and gave way to the fast finishing Gideon for the minor award. Gideon closed a big gap and showed a creditable effort. After following the leaders closely during the early stages of the third race, Frank | Serembas Authora took command on the ] turn for home and enjoyed a comfortable lead all during the final furlong. Bunt came with a rush through the stretch, and under urging displaced Vanity Case from second place in the last seventy yards. Vanity Case was a factor all the way, but at the end i -was hard pressed to save third from the fast finishing Cotton Time. After several promising efforts Purlie | eventually made good for the Meadowlawn Stable in the fourth race despite racing ex- 1 tremely wide in the stretch, but in the best I going. Purlie replaced Robina Seth in the t lead midway on the last turn and thereafter I remained in command. Favored by better i racing luck today Sweep-Net finished I steadily in the final quarter to secure second ] place from the tiring pacemaker, Robina 1 Seth. ] Thunderstruck added some excitement to the race when he reared and unseated i jockey D. E. Froggatte while at the post. The rider escaped injury and quickly re- : mounted. i Norias and Shasta Charmer led in turn I until midway of the stretch in the sixth race, when Richard McDonnell challenged. , Richard succeeded in drawing clear of his opponents in the last seventy yards. Shasta Charmer in a hard drive barely lasted to save second place from The Khan, which closed a tremendous gap in the last half mile. Penarc was a close fourth and finished fast. Norias tired badly. •
