June 9.— Despite the J muddy condition caused by the recent heavy j rains there was a good bottom to the re- J surfaced Latonia track this morning, and j many candidates for the six stakes to be decided during the thirty-one day meeting starting Saturday, June 27, were out for exercise gallops. j The Southland Stables Playtime, winner of the New Years Handicap at New Or- leans, and eligible for the Independence and J Enquirer Handicaps, came in for attention : when he breezed an easy three-quarters in 1:26. He was accompanied by All Upset, J 1929 Bashford Manor Stakes winner, and the pair broke from the three-quarters post and journeyed to the stand. It was work day j for the Southland Stable horses, and trainer Daniels called on a majority of the fifteen he has in training. Prior to Playtimes gallops, Miss Byrd, j an eligible for the Clipsetta Stakes, from the same barn, went an easy half mile in :56, while Bachelor Hal, a candidate for the Cincinnati Trophy, and also a stable-mate, covered the three-eighths in A0%. Castle Cliff and Abe Furst, which Furst, • Bauer and Hukili nominated for the Trophy, also were called on for breezes. The former was timed a half in :51V5, while the latter breezed three-eighths in :37. W. D. Covingtons Side Step went five- eighths in 1:08, after clicking off the half mile in :53%. Covington intends giving the son of Dodge a race before his trophy en- gagement. ! «
