LATEST LATONIA ARRIVALS ♦ More Than 150 Horses From Chicago Reach Covington Track. 1 Latonia Derby Candidates Pittsburgher, Spanish Play and Boys Howdy, in Shipment— List of Officials. 9 LATONIA, Ky., June 24. — The arrival of more than 150 horses from Chicago this morning, which shipments included the Latonia Derby candidates Spanish Play, Pittsburgher and Boys Howdy, makes the beautiful course take on the appearance of a meeting in progress. With the arrival of the three candidates and notification that Mrs. Payne Whitney would be represented by St. Brideaux, indications point to a field of ten engaging in the gallop of a mile and one-half that features the opening of the thirty-one day meeting here Saturday. A survey of the eligibles for the 5,000 added fixture shows that sueh candidates as Theo. E. Muellers Pittsburgher, which finished second to Mate in the American Derby; C. Gregorys All Hail, Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt, A. C. Bostwicks Scuttle, Harry C. Hatchs Cuban Grand National winner Boys Howdy, B. B. Jones Knights Call, L. G. Theisens Swift Pal. Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, Hal Price Headleys Jay Walker are now ready for the race, while Mrs. Payne Whitneys St. Brideaux will arrive from New York early Thursday morning. A majority of the eligibles were on the track early this morning, while several will be called on for their final long tests tomorrow. Terry OMally plans to send the Audley Farms Knights Call a slow mile and one-quarter Thursday, while Boys Howdy, Pittsburgher and Spanish Play will come in for "tighteners." In addition to the Latonia Derby, there are five stakes of 0,000 added down for decision during the long summer season and the large shipment from Chicago this morning contained numerous eligibles. In the W. H. Whitehouse shipment were the speedy Overlay and Royal Julian, while Bill Crump landed with the G. W. Parrish car, the Illinois Oak winner Alyssum. She is an eligible for the Latonia Oaks and Crump will prepare her for that engagement. The office of the racing secretary will be opened tomorrow for the registration of horses and Charles F. Price, presiding steward in charge of racing, is due from Chicago to give it his personal supervision. With practically the entire reserve seats and boxes sold for Derby Day, the meeting has indications of opening with the largest crowd in the history of the course. The same officials, with the exception of C. Bruce Head, who succeeded S. C. Nuckols as steward, who served last season will be present. They include W. H. Shelley, racing secretary and handicapper; stewards, C. B. Head, Elijah Hogg and T. C. Bradley; placing judges, W. H. Shelley, S. S. McMeekin and Sherman Good paster; starter, William Hamilton. In addition to looking over all racing, judge Price will preside in the stewards pagoda. ■
