I . I i i I , . , FAST WORK FOR WITHERS 1 Burgoo King Ready for Engagement 1 at Belmont Park Saturday — Osculator Shows Fine Speed. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 25.— Several of the eligibles for the Withers Sakes, to be t decided at Belmont Park, Saturday, were out in useful trials over the big Nassau County course, Wednesday morning. E. R. J Bradleys Kentucky Derby and Preakness J winner, Burgoo King, which has had several speed tests recently, was permitted to go j along for the mile handily in 1:38% and it ] was a move to leave no doubt of his readiness for the contest. ] He went to the first half-mile mark in i :48%, the six furlongs in 1:14% and the , distance in 1:38%. What made the move ] doubly impressive was the fact that the j last quarter was run in :24% and that the 1 second half was run in :50%. There was a slow quarter from the half-mile mark to the 1 three-quarters, run in :26, as the fractions will show, but it was a truly impressive * showing. Osculator, one of the W. R. Coe candi- ] dates, showed more speed when he ran his j mile in 1:38 and he also performed handily. ] His was a wonderfully fast move when he i ran his first quarter in :224/f,, the half in ] :46%, five furlongs in :59, six furlongs in 1:12 and the distance in 1:38. This swift 1 early pace wound up with a final quarter in :26, but it was a sensational move by i reason of the fast early pace. Polonaise, another of the Coe eligibles, covered a mile in 1:42%. The first half I was run in :49, six furlongs in 1:15% and ; the final quarter in :27%, which meant slow- i ing up badly. | Still another that was under saddle was Walter M. Jeffords Boatswain that ran such ! a good race in the Preakness behind Burgoo King. He went along for the distance in 1:41%. His pace was even throughout I and it was ample to indicate that he will be ready for his best Saturday. Over Time and Stepenfetchit, the pair from Mrs. John Hay Whitneys stable were on i the course, but it is not expected that either will be sent to the post Saturday. They went i along for an easy six furlongs in 1:18 and it is evident they are not intended for the Withers.
