Salmon, of New York, accounted for the fourth t renewal of the Thomas Curran Memorial Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings, and | the stake event on a fine program that entertained the second largest crowd of the meeting at Washington Park this afternoon. Running the five and one-half furlongs on I a fast track under 116 pounds in 1:06%, the victor, ridden by C. E. Allen, won by a I won by a I ® length from Col. E. R. Bradleys Broad Bill, , ! with the Dixianas In High taking third, | j only a nose back of Broad Bill and a length before Metaurus, one of two started under the Audley Farm colors. Red Whisk, C. C. Van Meters good gelding, was fifth after a I fine performance, a big loss of ground costing - him a more prominent place at the ! finish. As Red Whisk, which was honored with 1 the post of favoritism, dropped far out of ! j the running after beginning well and took : a wide course into the turn, Allen had Projectile third to Liqueur and In High. On i the stretch Liqueur continued to show the 5 way with In High giving way to the victor on the stretch turn. Before the last eighth 1 I was reached Projectile had headed Liqueur " L and as the latter dropped back In High continued " ! steadily with Broad Bill moving up [ and Red Whisk taking fifth position well I out in the course. I After supplanting Liqueur in the lead, the I l winner quickly drew clear and a sixteenth I I from the finish enjoyed an advantage of ■ fully two lengths over In High, which was i . second. In the final drive to the wire Broad I k Bill succeeded in wearing down In High but only by inches and, though conceding ground f to both Broad Bill and In High, along with i Metaurus, which finished with a rush, the 3 winner stood off his rivals for an impressive i I - i valuable score. race had a net value of ,580 to the ov, .f the winner, with ,000 in second I ! moi. , 00 to the third, and 50 to the I fourth. Fourteen colts and geldings started, , and the winner paid .20 for straight. . 1 j Broad Bill raced under 114 pounds, while In | High, winner of the Bashford Manor ■ Stakes at Churchill Downs, carried top of 1 122 pounds, giving three to the winner and 1 eight to Broad Bill. In the opening race, at three-quarters, f Sobieha, ridden by M. Knight, was returned the winner and she rather easily defeated Jessie Carey, Predict and the nine others that opposed her. Rusty, favorite, was crowded back when Hot Shot came across shortly after the start and, meeting addi- v tional interference at the far turn, the for- v c mer was almost eliminated. n The winner easily overtook the none too s courageous Hot Shot when ready after going a half mile and, drawing into a good lead, | was safe from Jessie Carey, which closed | boldly and defeated Predict a length for g second. Sobiehas winning margin was a e length. Although the three leaders reached the finish well in the van of the nine others, the /• second race, under claiming conditions and for two-year-olds, was productive of an in- ? teresting contest that resulted in a thrilling driving finish in which Bronx Park, the » winner, had only a neck over Lovely Hills, which, in turn, defeated Hernando by a length for second place. The victor, odds-on j in the betting, succeeded in wearing down , Lovely Hills after the latter had led the ■ large field well into the stretch and Her- c nando, gamely standing the drive, was right j after the leaders in the run home. Stride-away-was fourth. | Chicsu scored her first victory before local » enthusiasts when she took the third race for her seventh triumph of the year. Finishing with a rush in the final quarter, the vie- j I torious E. R. Bradley filly got up to win by three-quarters of a length from Ervast, with | Good and Hot third, a length farther back j ! and with as much of a margin over Jean j j Lafitte, which was extremely unlucky during j j the race. But for a lack of room on the far | j turn, where R. Finnerty had to take him j | j back, Jean Lafitte might have been closer j up at the end. | ! j Aside from a brief time on the turn, where j | f Patricia Marian got her head in front and j I until the winner rushed up in the late stages, , Ervast was the leader, while Good and Hot, fifth for much of the distance, improved his position in the final drive. * A. Bartelsteins Polydorus, making his first appearance since the Washington Park c Handicap on the opening day of the meet-ing, in which he gave a sparkling effort to finish fourth after beginning very slowly, scored over Supreme Sweet, Sundot and . three others in the South Shore Country j Club Handicap, the secondary feature. The victor, ridden by J. Maiben, proved easily best and. though racing very wide through- j out and brought from behind the pace, won by four lengths from Supreme Sweet, which . outstayed Sundot by a length. Hyman, stable companion of Supreme Sweet, was . fourth, with Silverdale and Flag Bearer in . his wake. j With first Flag Bearer and then Supreme Sweet setting a sizzling pace, the first quarter was run in :22%, and the half mile in , :45%, and Polydorus had to gain much ground to reach the front with his belated . charge and, getting up a sixteenth out, he earn* away fast thereafter. The time for the three-quarters was 1:11%. The winner was the favorite. ,
