V. Whitney tl came to the end of Belmont Parks spring tl meeting the largest money winner by a is small margin, through the success of the f "big three," Caterwaul, Top Flight and Equi- Ii It poise. The two-year-old Caterwaul led with n 2,195, which represented his share in the n National Stallion and Keene Memorial Stakes, which he won, and in two other tl events in which he finished second. a Top Flight won her only two starts of the £ meeting in the Acorn Stakes and Coaching A Club American Oaks, which were worth to to 7,925 to the stable. Equipoise won his a total of 3,975 in the Toboggan and Metro- tl politan Handicaps. The Whitney total was ii 6,895. ii The Belair Stud, showing one of the most a as promising two-year-old fillies of the year in tl Happy Gal when the daughter of Sir Galla- a had III. won the Juvenile Stakes and pro- c ducing the surprise winner of the Belmont ii Stakes in Faireno, ran up a total of 2,140. t; Fairenos Belmont was worth 5,120 of this, and Happy Gals contribution in her one vie- t to tory, a second and a third, amounted to i in 3,800. t Nearly all the racing stars of the East c were in action at Belmont and the list of t stake winners, while including such topliners P as Equipoise and Top Flight, also carries the i in names of other new bidders for turf fame t besides Caterwaul and Happy Gal. The I Latin Stables three-year-old Ha Ha, though v not a big money winner, captured three s races; the Brookmeade Stables Flag Pole t won two; Sage Stables Microphone, two; s Brookmeade Stables Okapi, two Foxcatcher 1 Farms White Clover II., two, and W. M. Jef- i fords Boatswain captured one of the major s events of the meeting when he won the Withers Stakes. 4 Some of the other large winners in the I stable list were J. E. Widener, whose horses 1 ♦ won seventeen races and shared purses in twenty others; Wheatley Stable, Greentree Stable, E. R. Bradley and Gwladys Whitney, r whose Beacon Hill won the International Steeplechase Handicap. s The most conspicuous failure of the meet- ing was that of Gallant Knight, the Audley Farm Stables great handicap horse. After i coming to Chicago from Maryland he was shipped to Eelmont Park for the Suburban t Handicap and, coupled with Rocky News, ] went to the post a strong favorite. He fin- c ished last in the field of seven. i A. C. Bostwicks Mate also failed to run up to the form expected of him. He was in the beaten field of the Suburban and later finished third to Glastonbury and The Nut J in an overnight handicap. Belmonts meeting was up to normal so far as the distribution of money to the horse- men was concerned. In the twenty-five days I i 14,000 was disbursed, a daily average of 1 6,560. - It was a good meeting, also, for the play- t ers of form, forty-five per cent of the fa- ] vorites winning. This is several points above j the general average. j The leading stables, winners of more than ,525 were: : Owner. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Won. Whitney, C.
