HYGRO AN EASY WINNER Returns After. Long Lay-Off and Defeats Pairbypair Handily. Swivel Is Victorious Over Miss Mel- 9 ody in Lake Zurich Purse Crimean Lad Graduates. CICERO, 111., Aug. 25 Hygro, sterling two-year-old of last season, came back to the races after a long lay-off this afternoon to turn in a brilliant effort .in winning the Deer Path Purse, feature race of the day at Hawthorne. The son of Epinard, which represents the Nevada Stock Farm, flashed all his early speed and, never out of restraint, sprinted six furlongs in 1:12 to win, eased up. As they passed the finishing line the colt was over two lengths in advance of Pairbypair, with jockey Landolt looking around, while Kibitzer f inished third. Mar-mion and Ladfield were the other starters. Hygro, regardless of the fact that he had not faced the barrier in over four months, was a prohibitive favorite and the race was little more than an exercise gallop for him. .When the break came he carried his 119 pounds to the front at once and, taken in hand, just breezed well in advance of his rivals for the remainder of the trip. Pairbypair, although put to a drive in the stretch, could make little impression, while he others were hopelessly outclassed by the first two. Hygro paid but 2.78 and was the second straight odds-on choice to win. The crowds continue to make the trip to popular Hawthorne and although the .weather this afternoon was a trifle too warm for comfort a good-sized crowd was present. The skies were cloudy and the track fast. , SNORKY MAKES GOOD. Snorky, usually a trifle faint-hearted, displayed enough gameness to win the opening race from a large but ordinary band of two-year-olds. The winner was. in close quarters after the start but maintaining a forward position got clear in the stretch arid taking a good lead, lasted to hold Bun D. The latter, closing fastest of all, was gaining on the winner while Polyphote was a tiring third. Hernando was the favorite but could never get to the front. The distance was six furlongs and Moran was the winning rider. Crimean Lad finally broke out of the maiden ranks when he won the second race for the Audley Farm Stable. Jockey Melvin Lewis rated the gelding along nicely in the early running and got him to the front in the final eighth to win easily. Triassic, which made the pace, was second and Jack-staff third. Despite the fact that Crimean Lad was competing against animals which had previously earned brackets he was well supported. The third race was strictly a two-horse affair, Broad Meadows and Journeys End being about equal favorites and the main contestants. They finished noses apart, with the Bradley horse on the winning end, due to a good ride by jockey Jimmy Smith. After Hot Shot had made the pace to the stretch, Broad Meadows forged to the front and at mid-stretch Journeys End moved up to challenge. During the last sixteenth Smith was plying the whip on Broad Mead- ows, while Allen, who did not carry a whip, "was hand riding Journeys End. The finish vas close, but the verdict was awarded to the rightful horse. REASON FOR NO WHIP. It was explained after the race that J6ur-neys End would not run for a whip, which was the reason that she did riot carry that part of the equipment. Hot Shot finished third. Swivel, favorite in the fourth race, showed an impressive performance to defeat her opponents. Pitted against a good field of two-year-olds, the filly, lacking early speed, was badly outrun for a quarter. She came fast after the back stretch, however, and, racing strongly down the outside in the home lane, passed the early leaders to win going away. Second money was earned by Miss Melody, which also staged a game finish, while Hour Zev showed a creditable effort to be third. Isaiah, Old Hillside and In High were used up making the early pace, and all tired in the stretch. The race was at five and one-half furlongs, and the winner paid but .98. The finish of the sixth race was very cldse, with many objections being voiced when Merrily On was adjudged the winner. The colt, which was an outsider, made all his own pace and held on well, but the majority of the crowd seemed to think that .Continued on twenty-second, page.l HYGRO AN EASY WINNER Continued from first page. Unencumbered, which closed fast, had gotten up in time to earn the verdict. Unencumbered was outrun, while Merrily On was racing his way in front but finished strong and would have been a certain winner In another stride. Oh Dave was third.
