ORWEL FOR THE ST. LEGER American-Owned Colt Co-Favorite With Aga Khan Pair for the Noted English Race. Special Cablegram. LONDON, England. The latest callover of the St. Leger card at the Victoria Club revealed the fact that all is well again with the Two Thousand Guineas winner, but Derby failure, Orwell. W. Mortimer G. Singers champion colt was backed down to equal favoritism at 5 to 1 with Aga Khans formidable pair of candidates, the Oaks heroine Udaipur and the Guineas-Derby runner-up and Irish Derby victor Dastur in the future betting on the St. Leger Stakes, to be run at Doncaster, September 7. The market indicated that Singers good colt is giving every satisfaction at Manton in his preparation for the last of the classics. After Orwells runaway victory in the Guineas last spring, he was backed off the books to win the Derby and went postward a 5 to 4 choice, only to be thoroughly beaten. At the press Derby dinner at the Savoy Hotel on the Monday night before the Epsom classic, one guest, professionally interested in the betting side of racing, remarked that if the short price of the Derby choice Orwell was justified he was rightly a 3 to 1 favorite for the St. Leger. "Well," remarked a certain baronet-owner, "I am always ready to take a chance of that sort. Ill lay you three and one-half thousand pounds to one thousand that Orwell does not win the St. .Leger." The bet was recorded. Since Orwell raced so poorly in the Derby, out of which race he came so badly jarred, as much as 20 to 1 was offered against his St. Leger chances. John A. Dewars Violator, said to be the most improved horse in training and the hope of the all-conquering Bechampton Stable, received some support last night at 6 to 1, this price being laid and again offered. Tom Walls Derby hero, April the Fifth, still a doubtful factor after his training accident last month, was quoted at 100 to 8, but received less support than at the last callover a week ago. Baron Edward de Rothschilds Fog Horn H., recent winner at Deauville, France, over the St. Leger distance and said to be a certain starter at Doncaster, had supporters at 20 to 1, at which price the Duke of Marlboroughs Andrea and the Dowager Lady Nanburnholmes Louningdale also were supported. R. S. Crokers Irish-trained Cele-brator, also a certain starter, is 33 to 1. H. W. Simms Gainslaw, 40 to 1, was the only other Leger eligible to attract attention.
