HAWTHORNE GOLD CUP OUTLOOK Saturdays 5,000 Race May Be Duel Between Faireno and Gusto Pair of Star Three-Year-Olds Will Have Plucky Play, . Conqueror of Equipoise, as Dangerous Rival-Other Prospective Starters CICERO, 111., Aug. 25. The Hawthorne Gold Cup of 1932, which will be decided Saturday, while it will attract a small field, several of which cannot be classed as of championship calibre, will go a long way towards settling the dispute as to whether Gusto or Faireno is the better three-year-old. That pair of colts, each of which has accounted for important stakes this season, has arrived from Saratoga and will renew their feud in the Gold Cup. Despite the fact that Plucky Play, conqueror of the great Equipoise, is in the race it is likely that Faireno and Gusto will draw the bulk of the play.. Plucky Play in all probability will be the third choice, while next in line will come Mate, Polydorus -and Sidney Grant, Evergold arid Brown Wisdom. At present Faireno is a slight favorite over Gusto. Gusto and Mate checked in from Saratoga this morning and arrived in the best of condition, showing no ill effects from the overnight trip. Max Hirsch, trainer of Gusto, came along as did A. C. Bostwick, owner of Mate. Hirsch announced that jockey Coucci would be unable to make the trip and that Buddy Hanford, who got his start on Chicago tracks, would have the mount. Hanford is expected to arrive Friday. Faireno and Gusto are tlande two greatest money winners in the three-year-old division this year. Faireno has to his credit the Hawthorne Handicap, the Dwyer Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Saratoga Handicap and the Shevlin Stakes, while Gusto has accounted for the American Derby and the Arlington Classic. Faireno has won 07,615, while Gustos total is 32,550. The Hawthorne Gold Cup will be worth in the neighborhood of 5,000 to the winner. While the chief interest in the battle will center on the tussle of the three-year-olds for the right to wear the crown of their age Plucky Play will not be without his supporters. This erratic, but brilliant thoroughbred is capable of beating Americas greatest racers when in the mood as witness his defeat of Equipoise this season and of Sun Beau last year, and Saturday may be one of his good days. That he is in condition there is no-doubt, for he put in a good workout on Thursday morning when he went one and one-eighth miles in 1:55. The fractions were: Half in :50, three-quarters in 1:15, mile in 1:42 and the easy mile and an eighth in 1:55.
