Princess Doreen Ran Ninety-Four Races to Accumulate Her Total Black Marias Great Record. The feat of the two-year-old Top Flight in leading all the money winners of the American turf in 1931 becomes all the more remarkable when her first-year record is .compared with the achievements of American mares in the past. Until Top Flight came along Princess Doreen, for several seasons called Queen of the Turf, was the leading money-winning racer of her sex, but Princess Doreen campaigned through several seasons and ran ninety-four races to accumulate 74,745. Top Flight raced seven times, won all her starts and hung up the magnificent total of 19,-000. This year Top Flight had increased her total to eleven wins and 73,125. For a limited period of racing Anita Pea-bodys showing best compares with that of Top Flight. Mrs. John Hertz filly made eight starts, won seven and returned to her owners 13,105. That amount was not quite up to the total of Miss Woodford, a comparative ancient. She won 18,270. But Mis3 Woodford, racing back in the early 80s, had to take part In forty-eight races, thirty-seven of, which she won, before she realized that sum. Firenze was another that was well advanced in the six figures at the end of her career. Her era was during the middle 80s and she won 12,586-in eighty-two races. Among the moderns Black Maria, which, began her career in 1925, was a leader. She ran fifty-two races, won eighteen of them, was fourteen times second and six times third, for a total of 10,350. Chacolet and Sallys Alley passed the 00,-000 mark and the latter reached her high place in the money ranks with only eight winning races, as she captured both the Futurity Stakes and the Pimlico Futurity in her first season. Chacolet took part in more than twice as many races as Sallys Alley. Princess Doreen ran more races as a two-year-old than any others mentioned, but her winnings in money were very small, amounting to only ,525. Without the flying start that the other "queens" and "princesses" had through their juvenile conquests, this mare had to run hard and often in many small stakes, overnight handicaps and purse races to accumulate her 74,745. She won more races and had more seconds and thirds to her credit than any of the money-leading mares under modern conditions. Some of her victories were in the Kentucky Oaks, Covington and Independence Handicaps twice each, Falls City Handicap, Latonia Inaugural, Bowie Handicap and Saratoga Handicap. Black Maria won even less as a two-year-old than Princess Doreen, only ,300. She began her accumulations on a large scale as a three-year-old, winning the Kentucky Oaks, Champion Filly Stakes, Ladies Handicap, Twin City Handicap and other such events. She won the Edgemere, Continental and Metropolitan Handicaps at the age of four. Anita Peabody won more as a juvenile than any other filly before Top Flight. She won the Futurity Stakes the first year its value reached into the ninety thousands, and her six out of seven victories as a two-year-old netted her 11,905. The accompanying table shows the leading money-winning mares in American racing those that have won in excess of 0,000.
