CHEVY CHASE STEEPLECHASE Rich Jumping Fixture to Be Decided at Laurel Park Today Rain Softens the Footing. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 18. One of the really important cross country prizes of the fall season is to be decided through the Laurel field tomorrow, with the running of the Chevy Chase Handicap, over the short course. This carries an added money value of ,000, and a dozen of the eligibles have been named through the entry box. Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Green Cheese is top weight with 162 pounds as his burden, and he has been going along in a fashion to indicate he is not unfairly treated. Spar is also named to bear the silks of this young sportswoman. Thomas Hitchcock is represented by the three-year-olds Escapade, winner of the Harbor Hill, and thus far unbeaten, as well as Silverskin. While Escapade is only one pound below scale, at 136 pounds, and under that weight is in receipt of only three pounds from Green Cheese, he will doubtless be the real hope of the stable. Edward R. Bradley will show his silks on Barometer, whose recent race would indicate he is. at the top of his form. His weight is 156 pounds, just two pounds over scale weight, which really makes him share the top with Green Cheese. These are unquestionably the ones that will attract the most attention at post time, though there are others of the lot under light imposts that have been showing a form to warrant a good performance. By reason of the continued rain, the field will be a bit soft and deep, and this will make the high weight a double handicap, and there is the possibility that some of the light weights will accordingly show to advantage.
