IRISH OWNER SELLS ATEFORD Special Correspondence. DUBLIN, Ireland William Barnett, the North of Ireland owner-breeder of the" Derby-St. Leger winner, Trigo, has recently disposed of that horses full brother, Athford. He was sold through the agency of Herbert Rich to the Japanese government and will shortly leave the Tickford Park Stud, England, where he held court this year, for the East. Athford, bay seven-year-old horse by Blandford Athasi, by Farasi, from Arth-greany, by His Majesty or Galloping Simon, from Stella, by Necromancer, from Hollywood, raced until he was six years old, winning, among other stakes, the great Jubilee Handicap, Newbury Spring Cup, Doncaster Cup and Phoenix Park Plate, and earned more than 5,000. He was at his best as a four-year-old, when, besides winning the first three stakes mentioned, he was runner-up in the Lincolnshire Handicap to Elton and in the Coronation Gold Cup at Epsom to the American invader, Mrs. John Hertz Reigh Count. At the end of his four-year-old career in 1928, William Barnett refused an offer of 5,000 from an American syndicate for Athford. Athford in his last two seasons of racing did not win a race.
