PROGRESS AT NARRAGANSETT 1,000 Men Rushing Completion of New Track at Pawtucket, Rhode Island. BOSTON, Mass., July 2.— One thousand men are now employed making headway towards the completion of Narragansett Park at Pawtucket for the opening of the race meeting there August 1. The old What Cheer Airport is rapidly undergoing a transformation, which by the last of July will make it into one of the most up-to-date racing plants in the country. The grandstand when completed will seat 12,000 persons, and there will be parking space for 6,000 automobiles, all on concrete, to make it free from dust. In fact the only dust that will fly at Narragansett Park will be that kicked up by the horses. The track itself will be a mile circuit and there will be a chute leading into the back stretch, which will provide for the six furlongs events. The stretch run from the turn leading to home will be a straightaway of three-sixteenths of a mile in length. The foundation of the track is considered by experts as perfect for the runners and predictions are already made that it will be very fast. ■ The stables will provide ample quarters for 1,002 horses. . It was decided to install a totalizator at Narragansett Park instead of the pari-mu-tuel machines. This will be done at great expense to insure the public the best meth- . ods of placing bets. In all. there will be 138 machines under the grandstand on the mezzanine floor and in the clubhouse. The totalizator will be in charge of Mortimer Mahoney of Baltimore. With meetings at Narragansett following both the spring and fall meetings at Rockingham with hardly any off dates in between, it is known that most of the horses that come for the dates set for the New Hampshire track will remain to race in Rhode Island, the expense of vanning from one to another, being negligible when compared with some of the long hauls racing in other localities involves.
