BROOKLYN HANDICAP FIELD Dark Secret May Encounter Some Real Opposition From Discovery, War Glory and Halcyon. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 2.— There is a chance that the Brooklyn Handicap will bring out a representative field, though there was a fear that the Wheatley Stables Dark Secret would scare away many of the other prospective starters. Now there is every reason to expect that the son of Flying Ebony will have some really smart competition. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery, which with a penalty that has been incurred will take up 113 pounds, is heading for the race. He breezed a mile and a furlong in 2:00 Sunday morning. Samuel D. Riddles War Glory, another of the eligibles, turned in a mile and a furlong at Belmont Park Sunday in 1:54%, and it was ample to show a readiness. Then Monday morning Jim Fitzsimmons sent Dark Secret along for six furlongs in 1:13 at Aqueduct, while Faireno, a stable-mate, went along for a mile in 1:41%. T. J. Healey will not saddle Equipoise for the Brooklyn, but may send out Halcyon to bear the C. V. Whitney silks. This fellow, which won so impressively Saturday, was sent along for a mile and a furlong in 1:55% at Belmont Park today. His weight, including the penalty incurred by his Saturday victory, will be only 110 pounds, and he might prove a worthy substitute for the champion. Halcyon has been used almost exclusively for sprinting, but is capable of racing a mile and a furlong and surely is in well at 110 pounds. s
