FIFTY-EIGHT ON BELMONT STAKES ELIGIBLE , LIST SIXTY-SEVENTH RUNNING Famous Fixture Expected to Attract Record Throng This Season. More Than Half of Original Nominations Declared OutValue May .. Be Low,er Than in the Past. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 5. The list of colts and fillies still eligible for the classic Belmont Stakes, this countrys oldest and richest race, for three-year-olds, was released today by the Westchester Racing Association. Fifty-eight nominations still remain in the book and, as usual, with candidates for the Belmont, all the stand out two-year-olds of a year ago are among them. The renewal of the race this year will be its sixty-seventh since its inauguration at old Jerome Park, in 1867, and its value will gross about 0,000. Its running this year is expected to draw a record crowd to Belmont Park. Chance Sun, winner of last years Futurity, is on its list, as are Psychjc Bid, winner of the Hopeful, and Sailor Beware, winner of the Junior Championship last fall. Other notable candidates are William E. Woodwards Omaha, E. R. Bradleys Balladier and Box-thorn, the Greentree Stables Plat Eye and Gillie, Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Special Agent, W. E. Woodwards Sir Beverley and Thrust-er, the Howe Stables Nautch, the Foxcatch-er Farms Rosemont and C. V. Whitneys Mister Gander and Today. A NEW DEPARTURE. A little less than half of the Belmont nominations which were still in its book up to its last closing, have been declared out, and of those remaining, twelve are the survivors of a list of thirty-two nominations which were permitted to come in a year ago as two-year-olds. The opening of the book to two-year-olds at that time was a departure from a custom which, had always required that candidates be nominated as weanlings. It was done to give horsemen a second chance to name those of their colts and fillies which, at less than two-year-olds, they had considered unlikely to go on to stake form. In this years list, Sailor Beware, Special Agent, Gillie, Esposa and Mrs. John Hay Whitneys f illyDouceur, were all entered as two-year-olds, as were Alfred G. Vanderbilts Gum, Cold Shoulder and Wayward Son. The value of the race this year is lower than ordinary for the Belmont due to the fact that its book for 1935 was opened in 1932 when racing in this state was being run at a loss, and horsemen were economizing in every direction. For years previously, nearly every colt foaled was entered in the Belmont as a matter of course, and his name left in long enough so that by the time the race was run the stakes amounted to a formidable aggregate. In its peak years the race grossed 0,000, and even as recently as five years ago when Gallant Fox won, it brought 6,400 to his owner. Twenty Grand, winning it in 1931, won 8,770, and Faireno 5,120 in 1932. In 1933 Hurryoff, its victor, earned 9,490, and Peace Chance 3,410 last year. STARTERS PAY 50 EACH. Such of the colts and fillies from among this years eligibles as actually go to the post as starters will pay 50, in addition to the fees they have paid already, and until race day develops how many there will be, it i3 impossible to compute this years winner3 share precisely. This years second horse wtl receive ,000, the third ,500 and the fourth ,000. Regardless, however, of its money value and altogether as a matter of prestige, every one of the thoroughbreds has sought to "take down a Belmont" from the year of the races inauguration. Its" list of winners through its history of sixty-six years reads like a roll of American turf champions. Despite all competition and with never any organized advertising to proclaim it to the public, it still remains .the race of the year" in the estimation of horsemen. It is the closest approximation, in this country, of the English Derby, and, since its purpose is primarily for "the improvement of. the breed of horses," geldings have never been made Continued on nineteenth page. A FIFTY-EIGHT ON BELMONT STAKES ELIGIBLE LIST Continued from first page. eligible. Of late years its fields have been somewhat smaller than formerly because it is run later than the Kentucky Derby, and such horses as fail to distinguish themselves in the Derby are not often sent on to it. The Withers, too, also run annually at Belmont Park, is run before the Belmont and has stood in its way somewhat. With, however, racing in New York rejuvenated and the breeding and racing of thoroughbreds vastly encouraged, the Belmont is practically certain to return to its former high money peak within the next three or four renewals. The nominations for the Belmont .this year are as follows: Sir Beverley, Omaha, Thruster, Autumn Nymph, Balladier, Boxthorn, Young Native, Psychic Bid, Carmanchita, Finance, Pompe-gret, Rosemont, Satrapal, In Advance, Plat Eye, Preeminent, Count Arthur, Our Reigh, Conte, Scatter Brain, Nautch, Firethorn, Sun Line, Martial Law, Sun Arena, Hill Town, North Wales II., Maple Astor, Whiskolo. Blue Armor, Gallaclay, Lady Wisdom, Lord Admiral, Teddy G., Sanctity, Good Flavor, St. Bernard, Tweedledee, Gold Foam, Bachelor Dinner, Today, Mister Gander, Old Story, Sorrow, Chance Sun and Gold Buckle. Entered as two-year-olds: Saxopal, Special Agent, Polar Flight, Malbrouk, Gillie, Sailor Beware, Esposa, Gum, Cold Shoulder, Wayward Son, Galon Boy, Douceur.
