MARYLAND AMENDS I THE CLAIMING RULE i. - - - 4 BOWIE, Md., April 5. At a called meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission, held last night, the claiming rule was amended to wipe out the. maximum price of ,000 as required by the National Association of Racing Commissioners. In this clause the amendment to tlie rule resembles the recent change made in New York in which there is no maximum claiming price, fixed. This action was taken by the commission after they received many protests from horsemen, and the utter failure of the graded handicaps to bring responses. Some of the graded handicaps were filled, but they were for cheap grade horses which more properly belonged in claiming races. The amendment is right in line with the manner in which the rule enacted in Miami during the winter has been generally received, and no state except Florida has the rule as it was originally enacted. It is also assured that Florida will fall in line with a change before its season opens next December. The amendment to the rule was heartily received by both the horsemen and by racing secretary Campbell, and it is expected that it will make for better and more varied programs for the rest of the Maryland season.
