1 GENERAL NEWS OF THE DAY $ : e American railroads, through John J. Pelley, president of the Association of American Railroads, have demanded that President Roosevelt discharge Joseph B. Eastman, federal co-ordinator of transportation, as the best means of aiding the roads to work out their own salvation. Cook County has arranged to sell ,000,000 of corporate fund tax warrants bearing an Interest rate of 2 3-8 per cent, which is said to be the lowest interest rate ever obtained by the county for its warrants. The last warrants sold by the county carried a 6 per cent coupon rate. From Ottawa, Ont., comes word that Canadas first silver dollar was minted Thursday by Finance Minister Edgar N. Rhodes and preserved for transmission to King George, whose twenty-five years of reign it commemorates. The first issue will be 100,-000, and by May 1 they will be in the hands of banks throughout the dominion and parts of the United States for general issue to the public. A saving of approximately ,250,000 will result from the refinancing operation undertaken by Swift and Co., G. F. Swift, president, Baid in a letter to stockholders calling a meeting May 10 to vote on approval of the action.
