ROWE MEMORIAL HANDICAP Headlines First Saturday Program at Bowie Attractive Offering Expected, to Draw Big Crowd. BOWIE, Md., April 5. For the first Saturday of the Bowie eleven-day meeting, an excellent program has been prepared by racing secretary Campbell. The bright and particular attraction of the day is the Rowe Memorial Handicap, a dash of six furlongs for the three-year-olds, to which ,500 is added as well as a valuable trophy presented by Mrs. Payne Whitney. Eight have accepted the weights for the Rowe Memorial, and of these the Brook-meade Stables Good Harvest is at the top under 116 pounds. Mrs. Charles S. Bromley is represented by Brannon, and Bachelor Dinner will race for Alfred Gwynne Van-derbilt. Currants is the starter for the Greentree Stable, and the others are D. A. Woods Jim John, J. B. Belks Wise Sister, Breckenridge Longs Legume, and Nautch, from the Howe Stable. Each one of these has shown enough to show an entire readiness for this sprint, and it holds out great promise for a first-class contest. A companion piece to the Rowe Memorial is the Naughty Marietta Purse, at a mile and seventy yards, for three-year-olds and upward. For this race only six have been named, but it is an evenly-balanced field. Like the Rowe Memorial, it also carries a trophy, and Mayor Howard Jackson of Baltimore will make the presentation to the winning owners. As a setting for these two features there is a dash for the juveniles that will bring out rather a nice band, and the other four events are fashioned for the platers, with two of them at six furlongs and the two others at a mile and a sixteenth. Altogether, it is a varied card that promises first-class sport. While the weather has been unseasonably cold, the attendance has kept up remarkably well since the opening of the season Tuesday, and it is confidently expected that this first Saturday will be a big success. Mortimer Mahony has predicted that the "Daily Double," which has shown such instant popularity, may readily establish a record in volume of play. It is a pool that has steadily grown since the beginning of the season.
