WESTON FINE MUD RUNNER Displays Keen Speed in Slop and Rain Saturday Morning. : , Boxthorn Goes Derby Route With His Owner, Colonel Bradley, Looking On Latest list of Derby Starters. , LOUISVILLE, Ky., April" 27. After two slow and disappointing workouts, which all but forced him out of Derby consideration, Jouett Shouses Weston this morning astonished with as keen a speed performance as any Derby horse in this or any year, and, as a result, again appears to be something of a "dark horse" possibility for the coveted Blue Grass classic, to be run a week from today. Working through slop and rain arid starting in the mile chute, the son of Nocturnal or Sun Flag came through with such high speed that he covered seven-eighths in 1:27. He went the first quarter in :23, the three-eighths in :34, half mile in :46 and three-quarters in 1:12. Despite the advantage of a straight course the first half mile, the move was a remarkable one, and if of no other value, stamped him an excellent sloppy or muddy track performer. !i Boxthorn, the E.. R. Bradley candidate, worked the Derby route of a mile and one-quarter on the main course in 2:10, driving, v- while C. B. Shaffers Finance and J. J. Flanigans Chanceview went three furlongs, together in :35. Conn Smythes Shoeless Joe went a mile easily in 1:44. Warren Wrights Calumet Dick, which is not likely to get to the post if everything is well with the crack filly Nellie Flag, turned in a mile in 1:43. Owner Bradley was present to see his son of Blue Larkspur perform and accompanied trainer H. J. Thompson to a vantage point as Boxthorn galloped to the head of the stretch, where, after a short pause, he was sent into his" long trial. Born Happy, went with him for five furlongs. He covered the initial quarter in :24, the half mile in :49 and five-eighths in 1:02. After a quarter mile unescorted, he was joined by Big Gawk for the filial three furlongs. Boxthorn, after completing three-quarters in 1:15, passed the mile marker in 1:41. Big Gawk was timed in :42 for the short distance he paced his stablemate. The influx of eastern candidates which did not train in this section or moved to the seaboard for early engagements, began late yesterday with the arrival of Mrs. Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Fairplay. With Sun Apollo as a traveling companion, the Kilmer hopeful came from Havre de Grace and shipped in fine fashion. He was on the course for a long gallop this morning. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Plat Eye and Sailor Beware, and Hal Price Headleys Whopper leave Belmont Park Sunday and will reach the local course about noon the following day. Mondays departures from two eastern points will include William Woodwards Omaha and DeWitt Pages Mantagna from Aqueduct, and Mrs. W.-M. Jeffords "Commonwealth from Havre de Grace. Mrs. I. D. Sloanes candidate, Psychic Bid, and J. J. Louchheims Morpluck start west from Belmont Park either Monday or Tuesday.
