BOXTHORN AND BLACK HELEN Col. E. R. Bradley Names Pair for American Derby on June 22. Entries for All Washington Park Stakes Beginning to Tour In With Deadline at Midnight May 1. Col. Edward Riley Bradley, the eminent specialist in three-year-olds, whose horses have won four runnings-of the. Kentucky Derby, Saturday gave formal notice that he is to be reckoned with in the 5,000 American Derby, which will be run June 22 as the climax of the Washington Park meeting. He forwarded the nominations of the best three-year-olds in his barn Boxthorn, the brown colt that will be his chief reliance in the Kentucky Derby, and Black Helen, the sensational filly that he is depending upon to sweep the summer three-year-old specials. With both of- them named, Bradley feels that he is certain to have a worthy color-bearer fit enough to send to the post, something which he has not been able to do in recent years. In 1932, for instance, he thought he had the three-year-old champion in Burgoo King, winner of both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but just before American Derby day arrived Burgoo King was through and there was no real contender for three-year-old honors to carry the green and white Bradley silks. Again in 1933, when he won the Kentucky Derby with Brokers Tip, Bradley was hopeful that he owned the three-year-old champion. But again his top horse failed to stand the rigors of training and he had no chance to win the American Derby. Owning two such candidates as Boxthorn and Black Helen, however, makes Colonel Bradley reasonably certain of being represented in the American Derby parade. Boxthorn is expected to start in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Black Helen, already winner of the Florida Derby as a three-year-old, passed up the Texas Derby and, although nominated for the Preakness, rumor has it that she will not be sent out for the Pimlico fixture, either. The report is that Bradley expects to win the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park with her, and will then send her west for the American Derby engagement. With all Washington Park stakes, including the American Derby, closing Wednesday, May 1, nominations are begininng to pour in for the Chicago three-year-old classic. Dixianas Debs Delight, promising as a two-year-old, is one of the latest. The Texas Derby winner, Roman Soldier, and Mrs. R. N. Fairbanks Bluebeard were among the earlier nominees. A triple entry was made for the American Derby by Alderman J. J. Coughlin of Chicago yesterday. He forwarded blanks for Advantage, Board Trade and Official, with Advantage ranking as the star of the three. As a two-year-old last season Advantage beat some of the best youngsters in America at Arlington Park. In the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap, Advantage ran away from the now highly regarded Roman Soldier and stamped himself as one of the most promising juveniles of the year.
