GRAND ROCK PAYS LONG ODDS • Spring Valley Stable Colorbearer Surprise of Meeting. « Defeats Crack Band of Sprinters in Spring Grove Avenue Handicap at Latonia — Track Fast. LATONIA, Ky., June 25.— Grand Rock, which races under the colors of the Spring Valley Stable, furnished one of the biggest surprises of the meeting when he vanquished a band of top notch sprinters in the Spring Grove Avenue Handicap. It was the first victory of the year for the gelded son of Cohort — Lufian, and his splendid performance gives him rank with the best of his class on the grounds and was just a slight improvement over his last effort, in which he finished third to about the same 1 caliber of horses. Black Miss, consistent filly that performs under the colors of Chester OMalley, came through with her usual strong effort to take second honors, while third went to the Long Run Stables Marynell, which came from behind the pace to earn her share of the purse. There was keen disappointment for the backers of Manners Man, a four-time winner at the meeting. While Cactus Rose drew heavy support, due to her sensational morning trials, her failure can be overlooked as 1 she probably was in need of the race to 1 fit her for a winning performance. Manners Man. however, tired badly after racing » i | prominently for half the distance, and was 1 Continued on eighth page. There was considerable delay at the post 1 due to the actions of Bobbys Son and Lillian Uhl, which refused to remain in the stalls, but the start was a good one. The Victor, while never far back, had to be roused vigorously to overhaul the early pacemakers. _ Once he gained the lead he held L on stubbornly fb outfinish the fast closing r Black Miss, which came from last place to offer the winner keen contention in the i final stages. The successful trio had the MM between them all through the final 1 eighth as the early leaders tired badly when j , the real test came. [ The day was ideal for the sport and another surprisingly large crowd was on hand. ■ The track, improving steadily since the rain 1 ceased, was fast and good time was made ; in the majority of the events. The Versailles Purse, occupying fourth i position on the card, was the co-feature on i the program. It engaged nine candidates i for the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes, to be decided Saturday. Miss Lillian Knebelkamps good colt Emileo was the winner and, while I held at almost prohibitive odds, encountered [ stronger contention than the wagering indicated, . when J. Shakespeakes Geo. Gable ; forced him to extremes to gain the decision 1 by three-quarters of a length. I Geo. Gable was benefited when brought t over sharply approaching the stretch and i eliminated Prince Fellow and Southern Way, . which were offering keen opposition at that t ! j point. The latter pair faded out of the pic-ture " | after the interference. Emileo. slow to find his best stride, raced i in fourth place the opening quarter. He moved up strongly after the winner caused [ the jam at the stretch head. It required some strong riding on the part of jockey j Willie Kern to get his mount to overhaul 1 the flying Geo. Gable, which had increased 1 his margin after turning for home. However, - the victor was equal to the occasion I and raced past Geo. Gable in the final 1 strides. Emileo was the shortest-priced 1 winner of the meeting, paying a return of f .60 for each ticket. Skalkahoe, gelded son of Morvich and Cushion, which races for Young Brothers, made an auspicious debut in his racing i career when he was a galloping winner of the introductory dash. Carrying 110 pounds, which included jockey F. Fernandez, the e winner raced the three-quarters in the good I time of 1:1S%, and won by three lengths.] ;. While the victor had a decisive margin at t the end it was the handy rating his rider r employed that proved a deciding factor, for r i . when Jockana rushed to the front, Fernandez - ! took his mount under reserve until 1 approaching the stretch before he called i upon him for improved speed. Once under r urging he drew out to win in hand. Due ■ to his sensational work the winner was heavily backed, being practically even choice j with Jockana. Miss Saxon accounted for r the place award while third went to o Wazayata. A band of maiden three-year-olds and upward h matched strides in the second race. ! j I The popular orange and black colors of the e j ! Keeneland Stud, maintained by J. O. Keene, , were borne to a well earned victory under r I | a handy ride by jockey P. Roberts. Ping g was the reported good thing, but after flattering his backers for three furlongs, tired and finished fourth. Grand Manner was the e one to give the most contention in the closing stages, and after disposing of Ping offered strong opposition to the winner before e submitting. He did so near the end, however, t- and was a half length back of the e | victor at the finish. Pawn Ticket, a length h and a half farther back, closed in third d place. A listless ride by jockey Willie Garner was one of the principal contributions to the e victory of J. N. Camdens Norado, which was sent to the post by trainer J. C. Milam. l. The winner, under a hustling ride by F. f. Fernandez, went to the front soon after the start and his continuance in the coveted d position was under mild urging to the final l1 j eighth. There he had to be subjected to 0 1 punishment to withstand the determined d challenge of Field Day, which closed fastest, t, t9 race to the end in second place, with h | l. F. f. d l1 j to 0 1 d t, h | the outsider, Sanskrit, leading home Ec-e :- | centric and eight others which included i | Joaney B. The latter came in for heavy y j j support, was taken far out of it at the e start and allowed to remain far out of f | contention for the balance of the race while I I Garner, her rider, took matters rather easy y j and made no effort to urge her.
