| HEAD PLAYS GOOD WORK « Trainer Tommy Taylor Pleased With Condition of Star. ♦ Discovery Given Mile Gallop at De-troit — Under Strong Hold in Cup Trial. • DETROIT, Mich., June 25.— Demonstrating that Discoverys world record-breaking performance failed to give him any cause for * worry, Mrs. Silas B. Masons Head Play, one of the small field of three or four expected to race over a mile and three-sixteenths in the Detroit Challenge Cup Saturday, breezed f a mile and a furlong over a fast track this morning in 1:55. It was nothing more than a breeze for "Big Red" was under strong restraint from the time he left the three-quarters post until he was pulled up at the five-eighths pole. Carrying 130 pounds, four more than his allotment for Saturdays 5,000 added prize, Head Play ran the quarter in :25, the half-mile in :50t-;, the three-quarters in 1:16, and the mile in 1:41%. Tommy Taylor was more than pleased with the work. "I never saw Head Play looking better and as anxious to run," said Taylor after the workout. "My stable was near where Bill Crump was preparing Head-Play for the Kentucky Derby, and I watched his preparation carefully. At that time I believed him to be the fastest horse I had ever seen, and since I took him over to train last fall, I have not changed my opinion. Track conditions will make no difference. He is at home in the mud, and his easy victory in the Derby Week Special Handicap showed he loves the Detroit track." IN FINE FETTLE. Showing no ill effects from his speedy 1 trip after his Brooklyn Handicap victory, | Discovery was on the track early and galloped a good mile. He was anxious to run, || I and his exercise boy had him under a strong- pull throughout. Azucar went through the same routine as I Discovery. He will have his final preparation tomorrow. » Clarence E. Lehr and Fred M. Alger, Jr., e president and vice-president of the Detroit e Racing Association, spent the greater part s of the morning in communication with Mrs. e Isabel Dodge Sloane, owner of Cavalcade. I Although it is not believed that the son of - Lancegaye will be shipped here, they still e entertain hopes of trainer Robert Smith * changing his mind. e In the even of only three starters, the r race will be worth slightly more than 0,- 000 to the winner. Second money is ,000, t third, ,000, and fourth, ,000. With only r three starters, the management will save the .1 fourth award, e From all indications a crowd greater than - that of Derby Day and one that will rank - with the largest in the history of Detroit s racing, will be present. Reserved seats have i been selling at a rapid pace, and it appears i- these choice accommodations will be gobbled e up long before Saturday. Y
