RED ENSIGN FURNISHES UPSET 1 ! , | I Outruns Crack Band of Three -Year-Olds at Narragansett Park. ♦ Lightly Regarded Pike Racer Shows Much i , Improvement — Albuquerque Turns Tables on Paradun. ♦ PAWTUCKET, R. I., June 25.— Red Ensign, a three-year-old son of Cynic — Charlady, - who won maiden brackets in his first local start, and was claimed from Jack l Howard by Percy Pike out of his last race here, drove to an upset victory over five ; others of his age in the Springfield Purse, , the mile and a sixteenth main attraction at t j Narragansett Park this afternoon. Col. W. • A. Jones Boston Brook was a threatening second and Mrs. Charles S. Bromleys Bran-non, " i split favorite with Legume, finished a 1 i tiring third. Lightly regarded by the patrons, Red Ensign " showed a much improved effort to • turn back his opposition. He came slashing l through a hectically fought pace duel in 1 which five of the six platers participated 1 from the half mile post to take command from Boston Brook when straightened out t in the stretch. | Boston Brook held on courageously, despite " his early effort in the race, and was 3 j only a half a length away from the Pike gelding at the finish. Brannon, after racing f in close quarters for six furlongs, was found wanting when the real issue came and was 3 two lengths away from the leading pair r and a half length in advance of the sluggish - beginning Alberta, the only filly in the field at the end. Black Gift was in the thick of the fight t until the last turn was reached, and then 1 retired into fifth position, beating only Legume. " The latter moved up into contention 1 on the outside in the run through the back c stretch, but Reid appeared to have trouble and was of little assistance to the Epinard I colt. Though a sharp downpour of rain fell just before the feature, the track remained fast. • One of the best off-day crowds of the meeting - saw the card on which Col. Jack Howard " featured the early events by rounding t out a winning double, with Little Nymph in the second and Albuquerque in the fourth. • Jolly Faye, daughter of Greenock, performing back to her recent splendid effort, was winner over the juvenile maiden filiies that | started in the first event. Small Devil, well-backed choice, let her supporters down i badly, quitting in the stretch after having [ carried on in the lead from the first sixteenth. Jolly Faye, after having outbroke - her opponents, lacked speed to maintain her r position. However, the daughter of Greenock was kept within striking distance and, when the early leaders showed signs • tiring, was hustled through on the inside. ■ As the pacemaker quit Ktwo, taken to the outside, closed in determined style to take second place, though a length in back of the j winner. Be Just, hard ridden in an attempt j to keep pace with the choice in the first 1 three furlongs, tired in the stretch though 1 lasting long enough to garner the show position. " The second race for maiden fillies was a i split of the first. It resulted formfully f when the odds-on choice, Little Nymph, triumphed. - At the end the Bull Dog miss had i ■ a wide advantage over Chessie, a first-time | starter. Night Court was along in the last couple of strides to take third over Lady J Camelot. Corbett was astride Little Nymph. The - Howard-owned filly had the speed to take - the lead at once, never to be headed. Her r winning margin was four lengths. Chessie chased after the winner from practically J the outset and turned in a smart effort. • Night Court worked her way up steadily on the outside to gain her share of the prize. |j It was a swiftly run five furlongs, as Little ; Nypmh covered the distance in 1:00%, or within one-fifth of a second of equalling the track mark. Great Lover, claimed the start before last t by J. Burkes, lost little time in repaying I part of his purchase price. Jessie D. M. • had the most early speed of the party, carrying on the command until supplanted from 1 the leadership by Great Lover. The High 1 Time three-year-old, once in front, drew out to a one-length advantage through the closing " furlong. Ima Greenock had never been 1 far from the lead at any stage of the journey, " despite Corbett doing his utmost on the filly, and he was unable to make up any appreciable amount of ground. Albuquerque, defeated by Paradun in their r last encounter over the Narragansett strip, • turned the tables on the Dunlin filly in the three-auarter of the fourth. The Monks 3 Way three-year-old, an exceptionally fast beginner, sprinted away into a good lead through the opening quarter mile, with Paradun in nearest attendance. Sablin had the others headed. Albuquerque continued to display a high ; order of speed and with the first half mile behind them, Hanford went to a drive on the Dunlin filly. Corbett was snugging Albuquerque along. When Paradun was placed 1 under pressure she was unable to close any appreciable amount of ground. Albuquerque B continued right along about his business s through the stretch, never to be seriously " threatened. Paradun, plainly spent from her unsuccessful I chase of the winner, lost the place e in the very last stride to Sablin. The latter r was brought to the outside in the stretch, made a desperate but unavailable stretch 1 challenge and while succeeding in gaining ? the place, never could reach the leader. The score of Albuquerque completed a 1 double for jockey Corbett and trainer rl Howard. Primute, showing a return to her best t New York form, had little trouble defeating I those she opposed in the sixth race. Kowtow, last to leave the stalls when she B knocked down one of the assistant starters, moved up on the inside to gain a prominent t i position. The Canter filly took command 1 briefly on the turn, but was unable to keep | pace in the drive under punishment, though I outlasting Boocap for second place. Flowery r | Lady, the favorite, tired badly and finished I I , out of the money.
