CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 25.— Turf ex- perts seem generally divided on the relative ; merits of the three-year-olds this season, but the division seems to have simmered down j to Omaha. Roman Soldier and Rosemont, with Sun Portland and Black Helen bidding for recognition. However, racing secretary | Richard Leigh, veteran official, former rider and trainer, believes much of the muddle i will be cleared up within the next two weeks and then a definite champion will have been proven, I "You know Tommy Taylor, who trains Sun Portland and the other horses of Mrs. Silas Mason, is of the opinion that he can defeat Roman Soldier, claiming that Reuters horse got him on a track not to his liking when he beat him in the Detroit Derby. He is , anxious for a return meeting. "Upsets seem to be the thing in the three- I year-old division this year and I would not be surprised that we will have just one of those things in the Ohio Derby. Sun Port-1 land is sure to start and we are hopeful , that Roman Soldier will make the issue. j But we have several dark horses in this Ohio Derby who may surprise. I refer to Beaver Dam, winner of the Clark Handicap; Clang, a much improved horse, especially in the soft going; Chief Cherokee, recently coming to his own under Ben Mitchells handling; Paradisical, who took the Ken-" tucky Oaks and has won seven races this year; Banish Fear, a former Bradley charge. now being trained by Dick Watts, and ; theres a real speedster in Transmutable. I personally believe that you will see one of the biggest surprises of the year in the | race here." i Nominations for the Ohio Derby will close on next Saturday, June 29, with a total of sixteen nominated to date, as follows: Ro- man Soldier, Sun Portland, Tearout, Pestle, Beaver Dam, Transmutable, Clang, Paradisi-1 cal, Dark Woman, Gallaclay, Blue Armor, Eddie J., Banish Fear, Chief Cherokee and McCarthy. «
