"Trapper" Hayes, one of the old guard, died suddenly Tuesday night from a heart attack, He witnessed the running of Tuesdays races and shortly after his return to New York he complained of feeling ill. He retired to his apartment in the Elks Club on Forty- Third Street and passed away a few minutes later. The body was removed to Larneys Under- taking Establishment on Second Avenue, and funeral arrangements will be announced later. Friends were seeking to establish con- tact with a sister who lives in Chicago. Hayes was born at Pena, 111., in 1861, and was one of the old school bookmakers, being highly regarded on the turf. He was asso-J ciated with Bob Rose and Jack McDonald. When the Agnew-Hart law was passed in New York a year ago, Hayes and Rose went to England and were active over there for a short period. Later, returning here, Hayes took up handicapping and was a familiar figure on the leading eastern tracks. He was a bachelor and is survived by a sister living in Chicago.
