WORKMANS BRILLIANT RIDING1 2 , .[Whitney Jockey Continues to Be the C Sensation of Aqueduct Meeting. I Plays Important Fart in Success of Lady q Higloss in Fridays Most Freten-tious Offering. i ♦ | NEW YORK, N. Y., June 28.— "Sonny" I Workman continues to be a sensation at Aqueduct and this afternoon he rode Victor j, I Emanuels Lady Higloss to victory in the v best race that was offered. It was a six and gj a half furlongs dash under claiming condi- • i Itions that engaged some of the better class 1 j platers, and the daughter of Ladkin, under j a perfectly timed ride, showed a becoming c jgameness when she scored over Thruster, • 2 from the Belair Stud Stable, which in turn 1 t had barely saved second place from Dewey Benthams Abner, and Mrs. W. T. Andersons 2 Jadaan, the choice of the field, was a close ■ t fourth. I The program was one of overnight events, ■ 1 but some interesting sport resulted. The ■ 5 track was a bit sloppy from the downpour • , of Thursday night, but fairly good time was 3 t hung out. The crowd was of goodly pro- - portions and there was plenty of activity in 1 x the betting enclosure. ! In this sprint that went to Lady Higloss, Jadaan was the one to jump into command 1 ] as the field left the stalls and first Abner r j and then Thruster went after him closely, • j Workman had Lady Higloss off well, but he • made no effort to go after that early pace J and he had his mount under a steadying • £ restraint while Jadaan was running a first fc quarter in :23% and a half in :47%. Saving ground around the bend, it was s , going to the stretch turn that Workman 1 made his first move. Lady Higloss moved 1 , up smoothly when called on and she was s ; soon in the contention. A furlong out she e j ! had disposed of Jadaan to take the lead, li ,but Thruster was hanging on with good 1 j Courage and the filly had to be hustled right t .along with a hand ride to withstand his s , challenge. 1 All of this was accomplished and Lady Y Higloss was over the line winner by a a - : length. Then, right at the end, Abner came ■ I , , again with a great rush and he was only a a : nod short of beating Thruster for the place. - I Jadaan had quit so badly he was another r length and a half back. ACCIDENTS IN STEEPLECHASE. The steeplechase was under claiming con- 1- ditions and over the short course, and it was s j j marked by two accidents when Thomas s Hitchcocks Nesconset, which had not been n 1 worse than third in ten races, went down n at the first fence with the amateur, L. E. £ ! Stoddard, Jr., and Berrilldon Flash unseated d Hernandez at the tenth fence. Berrilldon Flash was remounted and finished 1- the course for fourth award, but Nesconset hurt himself in his fall and came out it J of the accident lame. Mr. Stoddard was is Shaken up, but walked from the field. The race provided a stirring battle be-I *■ tween F. Ambrose Clarks Red Flash and • Mrs. William C. Wrights Silverskin, ridden n : by the amateur J. N. Theodore. They were "C always far in front of Matagain, the only ly other starter and, in the final drive, Red d Flash outgamed the son of Coq Gaulouis. J. D. Norris* Fair Deal was winner of the ie . 1 opening dash at five furlongs for maiden n juveniles of the plater variety. Breaking S I | , well, the son of St. James dashed right to -° ! the front and was never headed to win going g away by two lengths. The B. B. Stables Exeter closed some ground to take second, d, and William Zakoors Sentry just took third from Vitox. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Sobriety took k I the measure of Mrs. John Hay Whitneys ■ Gleeman in a fighting finish that came in in the third, another five-furlong dash for juve- e- ! niles. The pair fought it out through the *e ! final furlong, and the Vanderbilt colt was is going away at the end, to win by half a a i length. Well back of these, beaten four Jr lengths, My Nominee, from the Geneseo 20 Stable, outfinished Redley to take third. COMPLETES A DOUBLE. Workman made his score two in a row, and J. P. "Sammy" Smith also completed sd the same double when G. H. Bostwicks -a I j Miss Rainbow was winner over a big band id | I Of maidens. This was a six and a half furlongs tr- dash and after Workman beat the he I I others away from the machine, he hustled ed I the filly right along all the way to have ve her win by a couple of lengths. I Thomas H. Somervilles Treford was the he ■ one to take second place, and by a comfort- ft- I able margin over Mrs. Val Cranes Chatain and Buckminster was a close fourth. Buck Minster was the one that attempted to go with Miss Rainbow and into the-stretch J* he was a close contender, but under a drive he quit badly as the filly held her er lead, and he continued to drop back through £b the final sixteenth. Treford was always m in I the front division and Chatain had run an fourth most of the way to outgame Buckminster k- in the final stages. a .
