I CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 28.— H. H. Chopin furnished the winner of the Willoughby Purse, best offering at Thistle Down Park this afternoon, in Rex Regent. Jockey J. Dyer had the mount and only made his 1 move after reaching the far turn, but mov- " ing up steadily thereafter, wore down Dis- " cobolus during the final seventy yards to win under mild urging. Discobolus led the ! t way, setting a brisk pace and easily retained J second place. Arctic Star raced into third j position when the others tired in the stretch. • c Favorable conditions once more prevailed, c although rain fell. It was Ladies Day. The s t racing was spirited but like yesterday, many j the winners came from unexpected quar- ters. 1 E. K. Brysons Satin Sky graduated from 1 , the maiden ranks when he uncovered a bril- " 1 liant burst of speed entering the stretch in 1 , the curtain raiser and swept past the leaders 3 | a handy victory. Steadily improving her r j position, Lady Pharamond outstayed the e tiring Call Money for the second award after r the latter had been much used in contest- " , ing the early leadership with Grand Flara. l- j Securing a clear passage next to the inner r j rail through the stretch was a contributing £ | factor in enabling Frances Lou to gain a J j close verdict over the fast-finishing Sweet * , Joe in the second race, as the Ban color- " , bearer was forced to work his way up on n the outside. Oelniklas, the pacemaker, r , barely lasted to save the minor award from Q Donna Lascari, which came from far back. c- Fortunate in finding racing room on the e inside entering the stretch, Sister Ikie, a a field representative, drew clear of Barney y Allis and Occult, the early pacemaker, in n the final sixteenth of the third race. Barney Y Allis, in turn, was hard pressed to save sec-1 :" ond from the resolutely finishing Merry J Irene. Runtill came from far back to beat 1 the others home. Morning Cry added to the chapter of upsets *" when she wore down Mervin B., the e pacemaker, during the stretch and drew J clear in the last 100 yards of the fourth dash. Mervin B. had no serious opposition n for second. From a slow beginning, Alma-r l" del Jr., the favorite, headed Mt. Washing- =•" ton in the last few strides for the minor r offering. With the running of the fifth race came ie the most exciting finish of the day as the |e three placed horses reached the finish very y | close together. Wigrose and Clear Knight "* contested the issue, closely lapped for the ie entire trip with El Cajon in closest pursuit. . At the end this trio finished heads apart in that order after having dominated the race :e at all stages. Grattan, the favorite, was 18 never a serious factor. ■
