THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 1 1 BREVITY, Bay Colt by Chance Shot or Sickle Ormonda; Property j I of J. E. Widener; Winner of the Florida Derby and Favorite for j j Kentucky Derby, Due at Churchill Downs Today. J J By NORRIS ROYDEN. j In five trips to the post as a two-year-old and three-year-old Brevity has finished in front four times. He might have been victorious on the other occasion, but he was caught in a jam in the running of the Hopeful Stakes that was just as flagrant as the one which occurred in the recent Santa Anita Handicap. The last time Brevity went to the post he ran a mile and one furlong in 1:48 to equal the worlds record held by Discovery. That, in brief is the racing record of Brevity, reigning favorite for the Kentucky Derby, as well as one of the outstanding three-year-old prospects of the season. With the bay son of Chance Shot or Sickle and Ormonda, Joseph E. Widener hopes to win the Churchill Downs classic for the first time, a feat Brevitys half-brother Osmand missed by a few feet in 1927. The Philadelphia sportsman started a powerful colt in Peace Chance in the 1934 running, but he finished a fast going fifth after being in early trouble. Brevity might have been declared the best juvenile of 1935 but for his defeat in the Hopeful. That was his only important engagement and so his best opportunity to display his class, but just as he was making his run through the middle of the seventeen-horse field at the furlong pole he was all but knocked down, while Red Rain, gaining at the same time, was able to slip through on the inside to gain the victory. The Widener colt was listed by all the experts as one of the leaders in a scrambled division and a Hopeful triumph very likely would have given him prime consideration because of his otherwise unblemished record, brief as it was. In the last of his three efforts as a juvenile Brevity triumphed in the Champagne Stakes, in which he defeated many of the leading participants in the Belmont Futurity. He could not be a starter in the latter special because of being declared as a weanling due to his unprepossessing size and makeup. However, he blossomed into an attractive yearling in time to be nominated for the Hopeful. Prior to the Hopeful Brevity was started in a maiden race and he fulfilled the expectations of trainer Peter Coyne by defeating such other promising youngsters as Aneroid, Granville and Bow to Me in very handy fashion. Then came the Hopeful in which he was reserved just back of the first division until reaching the stretch, where he started on what appeared to be a rush to victory, only to be knocked off his stride just as he was overtaking the leaders. Nevertheless he was beaten only by a length and a half by Red Rain while finishing sixth. In the Champagne Stakes, which gave Brevity his first and only taste of competition over a straight course, he led most of the way over the six and a half furlong distance, standing a hard drive during the last quarter mile to nose out Snark, with Granville, Tatterdemalion, Hollyrood and other good colts behind him. He ran the distance in 1:17, exactly the time required by Tintagel in capturing the Futurity. Brevity was laid away for the remainder of the season, but was shipped to Hialeah Park to be prepared for the Florida Derby. After careful preparation, Brevity came out torun a mile in 1:36 to easily defeat some of the best three-year-olds in winter training. Trlis effort put him on edge for the Florida Derby, in which he went to the front in the run to the first turn after being off none too smartly and thereafter made the pace to suit himself, but it was such as to equal Discoverys mark. The Widener colorbearer had up his weight of 126 pounds and raced around two turns, whereas, Discoverys record was made around one turn and with 123 pounds up, although he was a four-year-old at the time. Brevity could have broken the mark, as he triumphed very easily with five lengths to spare over Dnieper and Bright Plumage. Trainer Coyne will keep him at Hialeah until about three weeks before the Derby, when he will be shipped to Churchill Downs to complete his preparation. This latest star foaled by Ormonda comes from a running family. Ormondas half-sister was responsible for the Futurity winner Maskette and other half-sisters were grand-dams of Bubbling Over and Sun Pal, both stout performers. Brevity gets ample staying qualities from his sire and from the sire of his second dam, most of his speed being attributed to Superman, a Domino horse, which sired Ormonda. f Bona Vista fCyllenc rrolymclus - Arcadia C LMaid Marian j Hampton .2 I Quiver fandH f Sainfoin J Springfield LBromus J Sanda LCheery St. Simon 2 J t Sunrise f St. Simon S Galopin f Chaucer St. Angela J2 c .Canterbury Pilgrim S Tristan u L -I I Pilgrimage W fMinoru . fCylleno $ LSerenissima J Mother Sicgel H 3 LGondolettc Loved One 1 H Dongola W g I "Domino f Himyar K c rCommando -I Mannie Gray W LEmmaC V Darebin f g J Guenn " fBendOr Doncaster g w LAnomaly J Rouge Rose LBIue Rose Coeuruleus Angelica f Ormonde V Bend Or o rOrmondale Lily Agnes U , Lsanta Bella S St. Serf -I X Maiden Belle g L , . , , f Ben Holladay Hanover b LOphirdale J Mollie L.
