BREVIH DUE AT CHURCHILL DOWNS TODAY Kentucky Derby Favorite Expected to Reach Louisville From Florida Trainer Coyne and Jockey Wayne Wright to Accompany Shipment of Widener Horses Coldstream Expected to Arrive on Scene Monday BREVITY LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 7 With the anticipated arrival of Brevity, ranking favorite, providing the chief impetus, interest in the sixty-second annual Kentucky Derby, to be run at Churchill Downs here on May 2, rose to a new seasons high in this section today. Brevity, sensational winner of the Florida Derby, in which he equalled the American record of 1:48 for a mile and an eighth, is expected at Churchill Downs tomorrow. With several stable companions and in charge of Joseph E. Wideners chief trainer, Pete Coyne, the Kentucky Derby favorite was to start north from Hialeah Park, near Miami, today. As no word altering this schedule had been received by Churchill Downs officials, it was assumed that he would reach the Derby course Wednesday, a date set for his arrival by trainer Coyne several weeks ago. Preparations for his reception were completed today. Track superintendent Thomas Young personally looked after the many details attendant to his unloading and immediate care at the Downs. The private barn maintained by Brevitys owner at the local track had been put in the proverbial apple pie order with stalls bedded down for all in the string Coyne is bringing from Florida. Soon after Coynes arrival a large number of additions to the stable will be transferred here from Wideners. Elmendorf Farm just outside of Lexington. Among the horses accompanying Brevity is Dnieper, runner-up to Brevity in the Florida Derby, and also to C. V. Whitneys Bright Plumage in the Derby Consolation Stakes at Tropical Park last Saturday. Owned by Mrs. P. A. B. Widener, daughter-in-law of the master of Elmendorf Farm, Dnieper also is elegible for the Kentucky Derby. Wayne Wright, under contract to the Widener stable, and one of the countrys foremost jockeys, is expected to either accompany Coyne from Florida or to report to him here within a few days. Wright comes to Churchill Downs with an enviable record. In recent weeks he has guided the winners .Continued on eighteenth page.X I BREVITY due today at CHURCHILL DOWNS Continued from first page. of the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap, the 5,000 Santa Anita Derby, the Florida Derby and other races. He won the Santa Anita Handicap with Top Row and the Derby at the same California track astride He Did. In addition to the coveted Kentucky Derby mount on Brevity, Wright also may fill engagements for the Widener. stable in the Clark Handicap and Bashford Manor Stake3 here thi3 spring. Dnieper has been named for the Clark Handicap, while Aftermath la a J. E. Widener nominee for the Bashford Manor Stake3. While Brevity naturally will command the spotlight here for some time, possibly right up until the Derby is decided, several other candidates which preceded the Widener colt here are expected to continue to receive their share of public attention. Others too, will be arriving from time to time during the course of the next several weeks and, except for brief periods when interest in the three-year-olds will be diverted to Texas, when the Texas Derby is run, and East for several events in which Kentucky Derby hopefuls are to participate, Louisville will be the focal point from now on. Among those which already have been on exhibition at Churchill Downs this spring are H. H. Hectors Wise Duke, Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Silas, H. H. Cross Capt. Cal, Charles R. Thompsons Boston Pal and several others of lesser prominence. Of these early arriving Derby eligibles Wise Duke is the better known. He is trained by Sherrill Ward and last year won five of fifteen engagements, including the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre de Grace and the Hialeah Juvenile Championship Stakes at Hialeah Park. His earnings total 0,350. Within ten days the Derby contingent at Churchill Downs will be augmented by the candidates of Edward R. Bradley, who has won the famous race four times, and those of C. B. Shaffer and his son, E. D. "Shaffer. Bradley, whose candidates have been in training at his Idle Hour Farm near Lexington, will include, among eighteen scheduled to reach the local track on April 15, the Derby colts Bien Joli, Banister and Bow to Me, of which Bien Joli -enjoys highest rating, having won the East View Stakes at Empire City together with a sparkling second in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga and a creditable third in the Saratoga Special at the same track. Coldstream, regarded as one of the stoutest of western Derby candidates arid owned by the elder Shaffer, is the star of the Shaffer establishment. Trainer Alec Gordon will transfer him from Coldstream Farm, also in the Blue Grass belt, next Monday. Other Derby eligibles in the stable are Noble Star and Bulwark, owned by the younger Shaffer. Just how many others Gordon will bring to the Downs is not definitely known, but with candidates for other of the Downs spring stakes along with a number of other useful horses carried over from last season and a big crop of juveniles, the stable will be one of the largest to come here for the meeting which opens April 25. Starting thirteen times last year, Cold- stream scored six victories, among them a triumph in the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park, and one in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. He also dead-heated with Red Rain in the Saratoga Special and his earnings thus far are 6,150.
